| | Tom Kubis A Jazz Musician's Christmas CD Tom Kubis Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
The Tom Kubis Big Band, featuring the leader's arrangements, performs a variety of Yuletide favorites on this cheerful and hard-swinging set. The music was originally released on a pair of Cexton LPs, so this is a Tom Kubis Christmas best-of collection. Two recent Kubis songs, "A Jazz Musician's Christmas" and a humorous version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas (My Agent Gave to Me)," which has new lyrics, feature the singing of Jack Sheldon, who also takes a pair of trumpet solos. Among the key soloists are Kubis (on soprano and piano), trumpeters Wayne Bergeron and Stan Martin, trombonist Andy Martin, and Pete Christlieb (who takes a tenor solo on "We Three Kings"), while Carol Jolin has vocals on "Let It Snow" and "Winter Wonderland." The music is conventional big-band hard bop, but expertly played and with enough variety to keep one's attention throughout. Recommended to fans of modern swinging big bands. ~ Scott Yanow A Jazz Musician's Christmas Music Tom Kubis A Jazz Musician's Christmas Songs A Jazz Musician's Christmas Music Review Purchase A Jazz Musician's Christmas CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Tom Kubis Keep Swingin' CD (1997)

| | Bill Holman Band Live CD (2005)
A Jazz Musician's Christmas music CDs
$13.45 Although Bill Holman is one of the all-time great arrangers and the leader of a stirring big band in the Los Angeles area, this was his first recording as a leader in seven years. Performed at a Maynard Ferguson tribute convention/festival put on by Ken Poston, the music played by the Bill Holman Orchestra is a little more boppish than usual for a Holman set, particularly the romping "Zoot 'n' Al," a tribute to Zoot Sims and Al Cohn. However, Holman's arrangements are quite complex, full of surprises and full of excitement. ...

A Jazz Musician's Christmas CD music
$10.49 Manhattan Wildlife Refuge and its follow-up, The Tiger of San Pedro, are the only two recordings of trombonist Bill Watrous' impressive big band of the mid-'70s. Watrous, who takes an uncharacteristically crazy cadenza on "Fourth Floor Walk-Up," is in top form on such numbers as Chick Corea's "Spain," "Dichotomy," and "Zip City." Among his more notable sidemen are trumpeter Danny Stiles, guitarist Joe Beck, and ...

| | Jackie DeShannon Breakin It Up On The Beatles Tour (Remsatered) CD (1964) (Import) Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom
A Jazz Musician's Christmas CD music
$16.19 Legendary female singing sensation and chosen concert opener for The Beatles' legendary material from the early 60s; Digital remaster containing eight additional songs. U.K. import.
Contrary to what the exploitative title might have you believe, this was not recorded during a Beatles tour (though Jackie DeShannon was an opening act on their 1964 North American tour), or even a live album. Instead, it was something of a grab bag of a dozen tracks that had already been released on Liberty singles between 1962 and 1964. For all its scattered origins, however, it was a pretty good compilation of her early-'60s work, though it was neither definitive nor the very best dozen tracks she did during this period. The best stuff is extremely good, however, ...
