The most feared man ever to exist, Attila (Scottish newcomer Gerard Butler) was King of the Huns in the 5th century, and during his reign he united the various tribes of barbarians to wreak havoc against the Roman Empire. More than a warrior, Attila was a man with human frailities and conflicts. His captivating story comes to life in this 4-hour epic mini-series that examines the facts and legends that surround Attila. Highlighting his triumphs over rival barbarian tribes, his defeat by the Romans, and loves found and lost, Attila's story is the story of the fate of the Western World. Attila the Hun's bloodthirsty rise to world dominance is portrayed in the sweeping and epic, ATTILA. Director Dick Lowry Attila follows Attila with glorious and fastidious detail from his youth as a warrior in training in fifth-century Europe through his rapid rise to dominance. A fortune teller predicts that the young Attila will one day lead the Huns and possibly the world, and as he reaches adulthood this prophecy seems destined to come true. A bitter rivalry with his brother Bleda is the only thing keeping him from his glory. When Bleda has King Rua assassinated, Attila confronts him in a duel and wins both the throne and Bleda's wife, N'Kara. Attila's single-minded skill in battle helps him amass an empire bigger than any other. But the film portrays the warriors inner world, as he struggles with the loss of his life and the difficulties of destiny, revenge, deception, and betrayal. With only one rival in his way--the Romans--lead by Attila's former ally Flavius Aetius, Attila is poised to conquer the world, as the two headstrong and ambitious leaders face off at the legendary Battle of Chalons.
ATTILA was made for the USA Network on cable television. Television release: January 30, 2001 (USA network).
The trailer for ATTILA, a made-for-television miniseries, was shown in movie theaters. According to the USA network, ATTILA was the "highest rated original miniseries on basic cable since USA's own MOBY DICK."
Regarding the casting of hunky Gerard Butler in the lead role, co-executive producer Michael Joyce said that according to historians, the real Attila "was an ugly, squat guy."
Butler told the New York Daily News, "I have a lot of love for the guy. [Attila]'s been painted very negatively through time....He's known as a demonic, crazy figure, but there's a lot more to the man....He wasn't necessarily a great guy or the devil, but he was extreme." Attila Reviews: "...[A] surprisingly well-produced cable epic..."

Attila Movie Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Atilla: a wonderful surprise! Our local paper gave this movie a rather bad review, but even so I decided to buy the DVD. Much to my surprise and delight I found it extremely interesting and well done. The bonus was the casting of the buff and roughly beautiful Girard Butler as Atila. This is an actor to watch as his star is rising! Submitted by dmcmillan01 (Riverside, California, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Wonderful Action Epic Attila is played as a masterful and brilliant leader and king of Huns, which in reality he was. Some thought of him almost as a "God", and Gerard Butler played him well, his role was portrayed in an excellent manner with humor and deep wisdom. Gerry and Powers Booth made this one of the most interesting films on Television in years. I Loved it! Submitted by Glinda (L. A. Calif. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Gerry buen Attila ¡Brillante! Attila review
$9.79 Five years after directing the heist classic RIFIFI, Jules Dassin returns to robbery with TOPKAPI. Again there is a long and daring break-in, as his heroes attempt to steal the priceless Emerald Dagger from the Topkapi Palace Museum in Istanbul, but in contrast to the bleak RIFIFI, the mood in TOPKAPI is one of comedy. Dassin focuses on the bumbling Arthur Simpson (Peter Ustinov), who barely makes a living conning tourists. Arthur thinks he's struck it rich when Elizabeth Lipp (Melina Mercouri) and her lover Walter (Maximilian Schell) respond to his pitch--not realizing they picked him. They persuade Arthur to drive across the Greek-Turkish border. When the Turkish police find arms in the car, they believe they have uncovered a terrorist plot. They only release Arthur after he agrees to spy for them. Elizabeth and Walter plan their robbery, while Arthur is drawn ever further out of his depth, as he looks for evidence of terrorism. Mercouri and Schell handle the planning; Ustinov, Robert Morley as the eccentric Cedric, and Akim Tamiroff as a dipsomaniac cook, handle the comedy; the Turkish scenery is beautiful, and Manos Hadjidakis contributes a sprightly score--the result is a light and airy comedy.
