| | Lee Burridge Global Underground: Nubreed CDs (2001)
Tears music CDs
$24.05 This entry into the ongoing Global Underground series represents perhaps the most eclectic mix to date, as Lee Burridge manages to teeter somewhere between straight-ahead mid-tempo house rhythms and dynamic breaks. And he doesn't just follow house records with breaks, but rather spins tracks that feature both styles of beats interwoven within the rhythms. So, given this untraditional approach, Burridge presents a set that's, at the least, always interesting. You're never quite sure where he's headed -- sometimes moving away from breaks towards a more grounded, 4/4 rhythm, other times doing quite the opposite. Furthermore, the ubiquitous progressive sound that has so long been a staple of the Global Underground series is, for the most part, absent here. Yet as unique as this album is within the context of the other Global Underground albums, it's not without flaws. In particular, the first set often drags, with its somewhat plodding tempo and lack of progressive elements. Sure, some DJs can get away with playing progressive tracks for five or more minutes, given the ever-evolving nature of that style. But Burridge's records aren't usually progressive and often get monotonous after a few minutes, making you wish he would either mix into the next track sooner or spin records that have a greater sense of development. The second set more than compensates though, as Burridge goes with a more dynamic selection of tracks that is heavier on breaks than the first. You get the feeling that this is where Burridge excels. He's not afraid to take chances on the second set, and often makes some stunning mixes that stand out more than the tracks themselves. So, in the end, even if Burridge is a little too conservative in terms of mixing on the first set, the second set is worth investigating on its own. Few DJs are going to offer a mix this daring, and even fewer are capable of handling the tricky transitions from breaks to house as smoothly as Burridge does. ~ Jason Birchmeier

| | Murs End Of The Beginning CD (2003)
Tears songs
$11.39 A ten-year hip-hop veteran, Murs doesn't want to be called an up-and-comer anymore, and he proves his maturity with one of the most refreshing rap records in years, an excellent debut for Definitive Jux named The End of the Beginning. Murs has an old-school flow that recalls Ice Cube, and unlike many in underground rap, he's not only got a clever delivery but a lot to say. What immediately impresses about the album is the ample variety of moods and material: "The Night Before..." is a streets-is-watching nightmare with a vicious chorus ("Last night I almost got shot on my block/Not the block where I live at/The block where I chill at"), but a few tracks later, Murs is inviting Digital Underground's Shock-G over to his pad for "Risky Business," and looking on in disbelief as Shock's alter ego, Humpty Hump, wreaks more carnage than The Cat in the Hat (sample: "Yo, is your Dad's Rolls blue?/Cuz I got bad news..."). "Transitions az a Ridah" has him remembering good times on a skateboard and ordering a moment of silence for all his favorite spots, while Aesop Rock stops by for the deliriously stoned "Happy Pillz." Whether he's ordering past-their-prime rappers off the mic ("Please Leave") or stressing over how much his favorite action figures cost ("BT$"), Murs is the most entertaining, least affected rapper since Biz Markie, and with the skills of Ice Cube it's clear that unlike the Biz, he's no novelty act. As usual, he says it best, on "The Night Before...": "Now some claim gangsta rap's to see an end of the streets, but it's use is an excuse to pretend over beats/So I'm-a lend my speech to all within my reach to tell what really goes on, from sales to the streets." ~ John Bush

| | Stan Getz Early Stan CD (1991)
Tears music CDs
$17.45 Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This two-LP set includes seven sessions from 1949-50 and one from 1953 that feature the great tenor-saxophonist Stan Getz. Getz is heard with a Terry Gibbs septet, in quartets with either pianist Al Haig or Tony Aless, with Haig in a sextet that features vocals from Blossom Dearie, on a couple of collaborations with guitarist Jimmy Raney and in a classic if odd date with four other tenors (Al Cohn, Allen Eager, Brew Moore and Zoot Sims), all of whom sounded identical at the time. This two-fer (which contains several alternate takes) gives one a fine overview into the early days of Stan Getz. ~ Scott Yanow

$17.09 | | Melinda Doolittle Coming Back To You CD (2009)
Tears album
$11.79 Best known for her run on AMERICAN IDOL'S 2007 season (on which she placed third behind Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks), singer Melinda Doolittle boasts a confident, neo-soul style. Doolittle's debut, COMING BACK TO YOU, released in 2009, harks back to the golden age of Motown and Stax/Volt soul, with tunes driven by rich arrangements, driving rhythms, horns, organ, and light strings (the old school-flavored mid-tempo ballad "It's Your Love" is a case in point). There are touches here of contemporary R&B and smooth jazz-pop, but regardless of the style, the focus is Doolittle's voice, which wails, growls, and croons in a way that will leave few unsatisfied customers.
