Lee Burridge Global Underground: Nubreed CDs  (2001)

Tears music CDs
CD $24.05  5 stars Audio Samples
This entry into the ongoing Global Underground series represents perhaps the most eclectic mix to date, as Lee Burridge manages to teeter somewhere between straight-ahead mid-tempo house rhythms and dynamic breaks. And he doesn't just follow house records with breaks, but rather spins tracks that feature both styles of beats interwoven within the rhythms. So, given this untraditional approach, Burridge presents a set that's, at the least, always interesting. You're never quite sure where he's headed -- sometimes moving away from breaks towards a more grounded, 4/4 rhythm, other times doing quite the opposite. Furthermore, the ubiquitous progressive sound that has so long been a staple of the Global Underground series is, for the most part, absent here. Yet as unique as this album is within the context of the other Global Underground albums, it's not without flaws. In particular, the first set often drags, with its somewhat plodding tempo and lack of progressive elements. Sure, some DJs can get away with playing progressive tracks for five or more minutes, given the ever-evolving nature of that style. But Burridge's records aren't usually progressive and often get monotonous after a few minutes, making you wish he would either mix into the next track sooner or spin records that have a greater sense of development. The second set more than compensates though, as Burridge goes with a more dynamic selection of tracks that is heavier on breaks than the first. You get the feeling that this is where Burridge excels. He's not afraid to take chances on the second set, and often makes some stunning mixes that stand out more than the tracks themselves. So, in the end, even if Burridge is a little too conservative in terms of mixing on the first set, the second set is worth investigating on its own. Few DJs are going to offer a mix this daring, and even fewer are capable of handling the tricky transitions from breaks to house as smoothly as Burridge does. ~ Jason Birchmeier Ov

Murs End Of The Beginning CD  (2003)

Tears songs
CD $11.39  4.3 stars Audio Samples
A ten-year hip-hop veteran, Murs doesn't want to be called an up-and-comer anymore, and he proves his maturity with one of the most refreshing rap records in years, an excellent debut for Definitive Jux named The End of the Beginning. Murs has an old-school flow that recalls Ice Cube, and unlike many in underground rap, he's not only got a clever delivery but a lot to say. What immediately impresses about the album is the ample variety of moods and material: "The Night Before..." is a streets-is-watching nightmare with a vicious chorus ("Last night I almost got shot on my block/Not the block where I live at/The block where I chill at"), but a few tracks later, Murs is inviting Digital Underground's Shock-G over to his pad for "Risky Business," and looking on in disbelief as Shock's alter ego, Humpty Hump, wreaks more carnage than The Cat in the Hat (sample: "Yo, is your Dad's Rolls blue?/Cuz I got bad news..."). "Transitions az a Ridah" has him remembering good times on a skateboard and ordering a moment of silence for all his favorite spots, while Aesop Rock stops by for the deliriously stoned "Happy Pillz." Whether he's ordering past-their-prime rappers off the mic ("Please Leave") or stressing over how much his favorite action figures cost ("BT$"), Murs is the most entertaining, least affected rapper since Biz Markie, and with the skills of Ice Cube it's clear that unlike the Biz, he's no novelty act. As usual, he says it best, on "The Night Before...": "Now some claim gangsta rap's to see an end of the streets, but it's use is an excuse to pretend over beats/So I'm-a lend my speech to all within my reach to tell what really goes on, from sales to the streets." ~ John Bush Audio Mixers: Todd Mumford; Jesse Shatkin; Nasa ; Ariel Rechtshaid. Stan Getz Early Stan CD  (1991)

Tears music CDs
CD $17.45  4 stars Audio Samples
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1991, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). This two-LP set includes seven sessions from 1949-50 and one from 1953 that feature the great tenor-saxophonist Stan Getz. Getz is heard with a Terry Gibbs septet, in quartets with either pianist Al Haig or Tony Aless, with Haig in a sextet that features vocals from Blossom Dearie, on a couple of collaborations with guitarist Jimmy Raney and in a classic if odd date with four other tenors (Al Cohn, Allen Eager, Brew Moore and Zoot Sims), all of whom sounded identical at the time. This two-fer (which contains several alternate takes) gives one a fine overview into the early days of Stan Getz. ~ Scott Yanow Out of print in the U.S.! Digitally remastered collection of early recordings by the great tenor sax man Stan Getz. Originally released on Prestige, these recordings date from 1949-53 and feature musical assistance from Shorty Rogers, Terry Gibbs, George Wallington, Jimmy Raney, Hal Overtone and others. 13 tracks. UPDATED DEC 8. 2002NEWS..... The response has been outstanding since the Nov,25th release of "Respect 1st" sales broke all expectations in the first week. Thank you for all the support, expect more soon.BIO....O.S. , stands for old Suisun, a northern California city in the northern bay area, with a population 25,000. O.S Boyz are a group of money motivated young men that consists of individuals that met here in Suisun, some raised here, others born in cities such as; Oakland, San Fransisco, Vallejo, and well represented from Sacramento to LA and all over the bay.The "O.S. Boyz" isn't limited to a core few, but made up of an arsenal of individuals with skills and talents in the form of rappers, lyricists, vocalists and musicians including; KOOL "V," DUECE, YOUNG C, DUBE D, CEDD C.A.P.O.N.E, BUMP, and B-DUBBLE showcased on the current release "Respect 1st." This album features the masterful "YOUNG C," who lays down the foundations for most of the knocking beats on the new album with the simplest tools. His ear for sounds and pure talent demand attention every time. At 23 we have a lot to see out of this beat prodigy. Backing some of these beats is possibly the best r&b/rap vocalist on the west coast,"Kool V," showcases his vocal finesse and his ability to make a OK song a hit. Guest appearances include NITTI on vocals over two fat ass beats from Vance Boog on Tracks 5 and 7. Future O.S. Boyz releases will include the likes of, M.G., Fred Benz, The Master Mind, Young D, Big Daddy, J-Snacks, equally gifted talents that are on another level and on deck to display quality from Northern Cali. The extended Suisun family runs deep with resources that have yet to be tapped. Look for skills on future "O.S." releases from, SDICK PEN DA KING PIN, who sets himself apart from all other rappers with his original style. A billion dollar diamond yet to be discovered, but ready to show his genius... and RUBO, whose raw style and sound is crowd commanding on the mic. Expect these and more blazing talents on soon to come releases from "O.S. Boyz" and "Making Moves Entertainment." The family tree branches even further, so look for individual releases, colabos and business ventures from members within. All of these ventures fall under the creation of "Making Moves Entertainment" and Cedric Gillespie whose first intent was to maintain a company whose decisions were handled by himself and his loved ones. This will hopefully help to expose true talent in its realest form locally and world wide. His love for Music and Money and a goal for success will be the establishment that will continue branching into opportunities and jobs for our family and friends that supported his plan. For booking and Contact. Coming Back To You
Melinda Doolittle Coming Back To You CD  (2009)

Tears album
CD $11.79  4.2 stars Top 500 Audio Samples Definitive Album
Best known for her run on AMERICAN IDOL'S 2007 season (on which she placed third behind Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks), singer Melinda Doolittle boasts a confident, neo-soul style. Doolittle's debut, COMING BACK TO YOU, released in 2009, harks back to the golden age of Motown and Stax/Volt soul, with tunes driven by rich arrangements, driving rhythms, horns, organ, and light strings (the old school-flavored mid-tempo ballad "It's Your Love" is a case in point). There are touches here of contemporary R&B and smooth jazz-pop, but regardless of the style, the focus is Doolittle's voice, which wails, growls, and croons in a way that will leave few unsatisfied customers. Arrangers: Adam Pallin; David Hamilton ; Howie Bend; Mike Mangini ; Tom "Bones" Malone. Personnel: Adam Pallin (guitar, programming); John Chudoba, Don Harris, Tom "Bones" Malone, Bill Harris , Tom Timko (horns); Raymond Angry (keyboards); Cindy Blackman (drums). Audio Mixers: Howie Bend; Michael Mangini.
