For those who have encountered Wanda Jackson in the sets of Neko Case, the wild rockabilly posturing of early Pearl Harbour & the Explosions, or on compilations or her comeback during the early part of the 21st century, this is a compilation made in heaven -- or hell if you are simply a fan of her later gospel records. Bear Family assembled a whopping serving of tracks and put them on a single disc. Her first-ever rockabilly original is here, "Baby Loves Him," as well as "Honey Bop," her politically incorrect but oh-so- damned-fine version of Earl Burrows' "Fujiyama Mama," and the burning honesty of Jesse Stone's "Money Honey." Her version of Arthur "Big Boy" Crudup's "My Baby Left Me" is arguably the definitive one. Her readings of Richard Berry's "Tongue Tied" and "There's a Party Goin' On" are genuine rock & roll scorchers. There is nary a cut in this batch that won't inspire worship at the altar of the Almighty Wanda. ~ Thom Jurek

Wanda Rocks
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, ...
| | Johnny Otis 1945-1947 CD (2002)
Wanda Rocks
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' recording career. With one apparently unobtainable exception, the Classics Blues & Rhythm Series has assembled all of Otis' Excelsior recordings, made in Los Angeles between 1945 and 1947. This provides background and context for his more well-known Savoy material, and indeed for everything this amazing person accomplished during the second half of the 20th century. ...

It's hard not to love the irony -- now that Wilco have moved past country music as one of their primary influences, they've gained a large enough audience to attract the attention of CMH Records, the label that has littered the market with bluegrass "tributes" to the Who, Metallica, Neil Diamond, Elton John, and Jimmy Buffett (along with more likely candidates such as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and the Grateful Dead). Most of CMH's Pickin' On... albums sound as if they were put together with just a dash more care than a 16-year-old puts into assembling a Big Mac, and while Pickin' On Wilco: Casino Side is a notch or two above their average, that only helps so much. A collection of acoustic interpretations ...
