Comedian Jim Breuer is best-known for his more memorable characters and impressions on Saturday Night Live as well as his portrayal of the perpetually stoned Brian in the cult comedy hit Half Baked. Before both of these incarnations he was a successful standup comedian with an open love of partying and 1980s heavy metal music. These loves are fully represented on his CD Smoke and Breu, with bits about AC/DC, hallucinogenic drugs, and drinking. The CD also offers insights into his three years on SNL with stories about meeting Joe Pesci and Robert DeNiro, experiences with fellow SNL actor Norm MacDonald, and the origins of his most famous character, Goat Boy. The entire performance is accompanied by a rock band made up of some of Breuer's childhood friends, which augments many of the jokes and allows the comic to display his uncanny ability to imitate the best heavy metal singers, including AC/DC's Brian Johnson. If there is anything lacking in the recording, it is that there are some gaps where Breuer is obviously performing more physical and visual comedy. It is obvious that the recording was culled from a performance originally staged for television and was simply adapted for this recording, but overall the CD satisfies both the casual fan and the most dedicated Jim Breuer follower. ~ Michael Cusanelli

For his third album, Inventions and Dimensions, Herbie Hancock changed course dramatically. Instead of recording another multifaceted album like My Point of View, he explored a Latin-inflected variation of post-bop with a small quartet. Hancock is the main harmonic focus of the music -- his three colleagues are bassist Paul Chambers, drummer Willie Bobo, and percussionist Osvaldo "Chihuahua" Martinez, who plays conga and bongo. It is true that the music is rhythm-intensive, but that doesn't mean it's dance music. Hancock has created an improvisational atmosphere where the rhythms are fluid and the chords, harmonies, and melodies are unexpected. On every song but one, the melodies and chords were improvised, with Hancock's harmonic ideas arising from the rhythms during the recording. The result is risky, unpredictable music that is intensely cerebral and quite satisfying. Inventions and Dimensions displays his willingness to experiment and illustrates that his playing is reaching new, idiosyncratic heights. Listening to this, the subsequent developments of Miles Davis' invitation to join his quartet and the challenging Empyrean Isles come as no surprise. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Arranged by Charles Blackwell and produced by the legendary Joe Meek, the instrumental LP Those Plucking Strings was originally planned for release on Meek's own short-lived Triumph label in May 1960. Triumph went out of business in 1960, however, and Those Plucking Strings didn't come out until this 2006 CD. Almost certainly this was mastered from the test pressing that turned up in April 1997 at a London record shop, not the original tapes, as there's some audible sonic imperfection (although this doesn't seriously impair its listenability). As you'd expect from a Meek-brainstormed instrumental album, the driving concept is pretty quirky, setting skiffle songs (which were already out of fashion in the U.K.) to orchestral arrangements with mild pop/rock touches. So you get to hear classics like "Lonesome Traveller," "Rock Island Line," "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine," "Freight Train," and "Pick a Bale o' Cotton" played with an almost raw energy by pizzicato violins, cellos, and violas, the rock quotient added by drummer Andy White (famous for playing on the Beatles' "Love Me Do" single) and guitarist Eric Ford (later to play on Donovan's "Sunshine Superman"). It's unavoidably cheesy, yet at the same time it has a ridiculous energy that's appealing in spite of itself. The strings dance through the songs with real verve, the guitar and drums add some propulsive grit, and the tempos often accelerate ...
