| | Van Morrison His Band & Street Choir CD (1970)
Griffith Masterworks DVD
$8.79 The dark night of the soul that culminated in ASTRAL WEEKS found its counterpart in Morrison's next two albums, the seminal MOONDANCE and its subsequent sister, HIS BAND & THE STREET CHOIR. Both released in 1970, these latter two albums defined the folk/soul/blues amalgam that would prove to be the foundation of Morrison's music. The photos inside the sleeve reveal Van as country gentleman, looking at home and (dare we say it) happy. This image is furthered by ...
| | Faust/So Far CD (1972)
Griffith Masterworks movie DVD
$12.99 Though a commercial blip in its day, Krautrock has become one of the most enduring movements in music history, with countless indie acts namedropping the genre's most famous as influences. Now, as then, Hamburg's Faust gets the least love. Revisited Records hopes to change that with this long overdue reissue of the band's classic second long-player, SO FAR. One of the worst commercial failures in the history of Virgin Records, SO FAR was a slight capitulation to the marketplace after their mellow-harshing debut: there are some hints of accessible grooves (the mesmerizing opener, "It's A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl") and melodicism (the Jimmy Page-ish guitar and flute of "On the Way to Adamae") to pull in the faint of heart.
Otherwise, SO FAR builds on the drastic pastiches of the first album: proto-industrial soundscapes evaporate into dreamier, layered ones and back again throughout the album's nine tracks. Faust didn't have the groove of Can, the thrust of ...
| | Gene Clark No Other CD (1974)
Griffith Masterworks video
$11.79 Ex-Byrd Gene Clark's early-'70s solo efforts, which rank alongside the recordings of the Flying Burrito Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young in terms of quality, vision, and appeal, have been unjustly overlooked. This is particularly true of NO OTHER, Clark's 1974 coup de grace. While the focus of NO OTHER's excellent predecessors WHITE LIGHT and ROADMASTER was on stripped down, passionate country-rock, NO OTHER pushes Clark's aesthetic to another level entirely. A cadre of female backing vocalists lend gospel-drenched color to the album, taking Clark's excellent compositions to church, and giving the whole a sanctified feel.
Amid the strummed acoustics and weeping pedal steel of songs like "Life's Greatest Fool" and "The ...

$22.09 The Taiwanese romantic comedy THE PERSONALS follows the often hilarious, sometimes sad meetings that a pretty young woman has with the men who respond to the ad that she placed in the personals section of the newspaper. Du Jiazhen (Rene Liu), the woman, is a young eye doctor on a mission to find a husband. After spontaneously putting an ad in the paper, she begins to meet with interested men regularly, and what began as an impromptu action quickly changes into an obsession. Returning day after day to the same teahouse, she is a quiet, thoughtful observer, letting the men tell all before her. These interactions are broken up by Du's nightly calls to the answering machine of her ex-lover, during which she communicates her complex feelings and doubts. She continues to meet man after man until finally, a shocking discovery changes everything.
Director Chen Kuo-fu, a noted film critic in Taiwan, adds intelligence and depth to a story that could have been shallow and conventional. Creating a lush sense of setting and mood, ...
| | Man Who Fell To Earth DVDs (1976) Widescreen
Griffith Masterworks video
$9.69 In Nicolas Roeg's sci-fi tale based on the novel by Walter Tevis, a humanoid alien from a dried-up husk of a planet falls to Earth in a spaceship--and later falls again metaphorically through alcohol abuse and the manipulations of a hostile culture. Arriving as a secret ambassador from a dying world, the masquerading Mr. Newton (David Bowie) patents several basic devices, including a self-developing color film and music recordings in the shape of small silver balls, in order to amass the tremendous capital necessary to build a spaceship. Along the way he solicits the help of a crack patent lawyer (Buck Henry) and a country-fried small-town girl (Candy Clark) who introduces him to gin, which he soon begins to substitute for his customary glass of water. Newton debates the reality of returning to his dead world only to have the choice made for him when he is swept from the launchpad ...
