Rita Marley Who Feels It Knows It CD  (1981)

Duke Ellington: Memories Of Duke film
CD $14.59  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Fueled by the controversial single "One Draw," Who Feels It Knows It was the album that truly put Rita Marley on the map as a solo artist. "One Draw," a hilarious ode to sinsemilla, was a big seller in England and Jamaica despite its problems at radio -- like Peter Tosh's "Legalize It" several years earlier, "One Draw" was banned from airplay on British radio by the BBC. The most controversial part of the song comes when a Rastawoman school teacher educates her class of students on the "proper" way to smoke sinsemilla. It's hysterically funny and disturbing at the same time -- the very thought of a school teacher doing such a thing is appalling. Meanwhile, the other gems on the album are also quite soulful. Lovers of pre-urban contemporary R&B can't miss the parallels between Rastafarian oriented tunes like "Jah Jah Don't Want," "Good Morning, Jah" and "Thank You," and the great soul music of the '60s and '70s. Of course, there were some reggae lovers who bought the album simply because Rita Marley was the wife of Bob Marley, who had died in 1981. But the fact is that she would have been a talented singer if she hadn't been married to the King of Reggae. Who Feels It Knows It made it clear that Rita Marley was a fine singer in her own right. ~ Alex Henderson Recording information: Tuff Gong International Studio, 56 Hope Rd., Kingston,. Although a couple of the groups on this compilation of Philly soul from 1964-71 are well known (Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Brenda & the Tabulations), the Fantastic Johnny C's "Boogaloo Down Broadway" and the Tabulations' "Right on the Tip of My Tongue" are the only cuts that will be readily recognizable to general fans. It's a grab bag of odds and ends, most fairly interesting. The Volcanos were one of the first groups that Gamble & Huff worked with, and several members would resurface in the Trammps. The two Harold Melvin cuts were done back in 1964, when John Atkins and not Teddy Pendergrass was the lead singer; "Get Out (and Let Me Cry)" is a nice, murky-fidelity Northern soul-type stomper. "The Touch of You," a substantial soul hit though not a pop one, was one of Brenda & the Tabulations' most exquisite ballads. Daryl Hall was part of the blue-eyed soul group Temptones, whose ...

Conceptualized around the visionary paintings of Harlem-born artist Romare Bearden (1911-1988), saxophonist Branford Marsalis' Romare Bearden Revealed celebrates the obvious as well as the less tangible connections between the jazz Bearden loved and the artwork it inspired. Reflectively performing some of the songs Bearden co-opted as titles for paintings, Marsalis also includes original compositions inspired by the bluesy, organic quality inherent in Bearden's art. Featuring his working quartet of pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis, and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts, the album also includes appearances by the whole Marsalis family. Brother Wynton Marsalis revisits his post-bop "J Mood" from his 1985 album of the same name, which featured cover art by Bearden. The trumpeter also keeps things bawdy with some brilliant plunger work on a live recording of Jelly Roll Morton's "Jungle Blues." Similarly, "B's Paris Blues" finds Branford turning his trademark soprano sax to the 1961 Bearden work Paris Blues, celebrating the beauty and ennui of American black musicians who expatriated to France for artistic and social freedom. Even Harry Connick, Jr. drops by for a lithe and soulful stride duet on James P. Johnson's "Carolina Shout." Perhaps most compelling, though, is guitarist Doug Wamble's solo turn on "Autumn Lamp." Inspired by Beardens' 1981 rural vision of ...

Duke Ellington: Memories Of Duke review
DVD $11.15
The legendary jazz singer Billie Holiday changed the face of pop music forever during the 1930s and 40s, imbuing her every song with the richness and tragedy of her own life and experiences. With a troubled childhood, and later an equally difficult romantic life, as well as substance abuse problems, Holiday's personal story ensured her notoriety; yet it was just this sense of pathos that made her music so affecting. With a broad range ...
