Fabolous scored rather sudden hip-hop celebrity with his catchy crossover hit "Can't Deny It" and the mega-successful album GHETTO FABOLOUS, with a style showcasing the perfect balance of the hardcore and the mainstream. However, while his rhymes were certainly palatable, his outer brash persona belied a subtle wit and unique way of looking at the world. His skills survive the sophomore jinx with the satisfying STREET DREAMS, a hypnotic tour through a familiar world, but with an appealingly organic tour guide.
Fabolous opens STREET DREAMS with an intro that closes with the declaration "I'm here to shake up the world." His twisted outlook (rhymes like "phenomenon" and "Ramadan") flavors a solid record refreshingly rife with self-reflective moments like "Call Me," one of the most conflicted takes on one-night-stands, where an admirer spouts "I like the video you played P-Diddy in" (his response "yeah, right"). Fabolous is an original rap artist reflecting a thug's poetic nature on STREET DREAMS.
His first record was the hottest rap debut of 2001 (despite an ominous release date: 9/11), and Fabolous consolidated his commercial clout, if not his artistic importance, with a safe sophomore record called Street Dreams. There's little doubt that Fabolous has rapping talents to match his name, with the smoothest flow of any East Coaster and dozens of great ideas. To capitalize on what made Ghetto Fabolous such a big hit, Street Dreams has plenty of club tracks ("Can't Let You Go" and "Trade It All, Pt. 2," featuring P. Diddy) and a few that advertise his hardcore credentials ("Not Give a F***," "Up on Things," featuring Snoop Dogg, "Keepin It Gangsta," withStyles and Jadakiss). Elsewhere he dismisses a raft of female admirers ("Call Me," "Into You," featuring Ashanti) and shows a level of general disinterest to rival anyone with a major-label deal. One of the singles, "This Is My Party," is one of the worst tracks on the album, a lame mid-tempo grind with a one-note chorus featuring Fabolous intoning "This is my party, so get fly if you like to" over and over.

In the year leading up to the release of his third disc, CHICKEN & BEER, Ludacris' distinguished drawl could be heard all over the radio on commanding guest appearance after guest appearance, most notably on Missy Elliott's smash "Gossip Folks." Not that he needed any more airplay--his first two major releases already had the Georgian rapper well established as one of the most accomplished Dirty South crossover acts.
CHICKEN & BEER is an apt title for the ravenously hungry record with few moments of sobriety, as Ludacris unleashes his most gentle of furies. In "Southern Fried Intro," he unabashedly admits to throwing all styles, even pop, into his musical stew, before firing the full-out assault of "Blow It Out," a measured, righteous, anthemic response to his doubters and detractors, including an on-point slap at talk show host Bill O'Reilly over their much-chronicled Pepsi flap. He then switches to seduction of the most swaggering brand on the hook-laden, dance-floor bound "Stand Up." As with Eminem, the way he allows his goofiness to take sway, it's easy to forget his similarly supreme ability as a wordsmith, but this forgotten secret to his success is evident throughout CHICKEN & BEER, another appealing record from the Dirty South icon.

It's easy to raise expectations too high after reading all of the nice things critics have written about Michael Fracasso. On his fifth album, A Pocketful of Rain, the singer/songwriter, rock & roller, and pop tunesmith offers up a dozen songs in his clear, emotive tenor. He's joined by an impressive guest list including vocalists Patty Griffin and Eliza Gilkyson, and a revolving group of supporting musicians including bassist George Reiff and drummer Rob Sanchez. One of the strongest cuts is the opener, "All or Nothing," a spare lament beautifully sung against the backdrop of acoustic guitar and a steady bass. Griffin's harmony here and elsewhere adds another layer to the mix, intertwining with Fracasso to create a moving blend of voices that perfectly underlines the emotion of the song. Other strong cuts include "Devil's Deal," with Griffin providing a bluesy undercurrent to Fracasso's high lead, and the title cut, a catchy bit of pop.
