This album by the Australian New Wave band Icehouse includes "Crazy," "Electric Blue," and "My Obsession."
On their fifth album, the smooth pop style of Australia's Icehouse is garnished with even more bouncy synthesizers and lavish melodies than their earlier work. Lead singer Iva Davies elaborated slant is immediately forthcoming in all the tunes on this album, but is truly the best working part behind the group. Man of Colours' first two tracks attached themselves to the Top 40, with "Crazy" peaking at number 17 in 1987 and "Electric Blue" reaching number seven in 1988, a song co-written by John Oates. After these two singles, the rest of the album becomes thin with keyboard -- crammed, syncopated rhythms jumping behind electric guitar that can barely be noticed. Even though the emphasis on keyboards is stereotypical of '80s pop, it's only after the third or fourth song that they grow overbearing, proving that they should have been used in moderate doses. Davies lyrics strain to be substantial, especially on "The Kingdom" and "Anybody's War," but fall short because of the meek support from the music enshrouding his polished voice. While the two singles are appealing, the rest of Man of Colours deems quite unnecessary. ~ Mike DeGagne

Icehouse ain't no cold deal When I bought "Primitive Man," I was really caught up in how it was like Roxy Music....just a little darker. Then I bought "Man of Colours," and what a treat. I went on to by "Measure for Measure," too. But none of them compared to Man of Colours. It had a certain swagger, still dark at times, a few inklings ro Roxy Music and just plane interesting to listen too. I had the original and the bass was just killer too. Well, the remaster brings out background sounds I never heard on the LP or original CD release. If you appreciate good sound and solid musical writing you can't go wrong with "Man of Colours." $16.19 "ICEHOUSE", "SIDEWALK", "WARNER BROTHERS", "CD", "ROCK" This remastered edition includes four bonus tracks from the Iva Davies-led Austrailian experimental rock band.
Sidewalk is Icehouse's least-effective album, mainly because of a stagnant array of narrowly synthesized pop songs which lack the warmth, melody, or perkiness that can be found in later efforts. The hooks are few and far between, and while their sultry keyboard ...
| | Icehouse Primitive Man CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Man Of Colours
$14.35 Long before they had pop hits in the late-1980s, Aussie Iva Davies and his outfit Icehouse started off as a moody rock band influenced by the glam of the 1970s. 1982's PRIMITIVE MAN, the act's second release painted an aural landscape of artful music.
As an oboe/guitar player involved in electro popular music, it's no surprise Iva Davies took to Roxy Music, especially on "Street Café" and the mega-hit "Hey Little Girl," which duly landed in no less than 13 European Top Ten singles charts, going all the way in Switzerland. An album of atmospheres, "Great Southern Land" ...

| | Luis Villegas Spanish Kiss CD (2000)
Man Of Colours
$12.89 While Latin influences are all the rage in pop music nowadays, it's good to expand beyond those boundaries and check out powerful instrumentalists like Villegas, a lightning quick flamenco guitarist who is the real deal. With energetic whimsy, powerful melodies, and intense seductive skills, Villegas should soon join Ottmar Liebert, Lara & Reyes, Jesse Cook, and Oscar Lopez as keepers of a traditional, irresistible flame. Villegas can play it both seductive and aggressive, and the mood swings and unpredictability help make the flow interesting. On the opening cut "Nueva Vida," he blends a high-tone melody with a loping rhythmic harmony line, hopping over a steady shaker percussion groove. "Salsa con Guitarras" is a speedy, ...
| | Devendra Banhart Oh Me Oh My...The Way The Day Goes By CD (2002)
Man Of Colours
$12.79 The first thing that strikes you about Devendra Banhart is his utterly unique and soft voice, which seems a mix of Nick Drake and Marc Bolan. "Roots (If the Sky Were a Stone)" is a perfect example of this, as Banhart uses his vocals and an acoustic guitar to get his brief yet often memorable points across. Originally recorded on shoddy and broken four-track recorders, the songs have a definitive roughness and audible hiss on nearly all of them, giving them a certain authenticity rarely found. Cars can be heard driving past in "The Charles C. Leary," but that performance is only one of the many highlights here. A number of the tracks are less than or just over one minute in length, often stream-of-conscious ...
