| | Level 42 Ultimate Collection CD - Import Level 42 Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
This is a best-of double-CD collection of tracks recorded by the British rock group Level 42.
The Ultimate Collection is an exhaustive double-disc anthology that is ideal for those who want all of Level 42's key moments ("The Sun Goes Down," "Lessons in Love," "Starchild," "Something About You," "Love Meeting Love"), in addition to select album material. Released in 2002 by Polydor in the U.K., it boasts digitally remastered sound and sells for the price of a single disc -- so, although it contains more than what most people in search of a good introduction want, it might be preferable to Level Best, the excellent single-disc compilation released over a decade prior. This easily trumps Turn It On, since it features no studio scraps and focuses on the band's best work. ~ Andy Kellman
Digitally remastered double disc collection from one of the UK's best pop exports. With hits like "Something About You", "Lessons In Love", "Running In The Family", "To Be With You Again" and "It's Over Now", Level 42 were simply one of the best sets of musicians ever assembled. Ultimate Collection
$10.99 Following a five-year hiatus that found Jon Bongiovi pursuing an acting career, these Jersey boys emerged with the millennial CRUSH, an album that found them making a mini-comeback marked by chart success and Grammy nominations. On the heels of this wave of prosperity comes ONE WILD NIGHT, taken from a collection of hand-picked live gigs meant to reward long-standing fans (who've clamored for a concert album) and give newer ones a taste of Bon Jovi's career-spanning global performances.
In the 15-year span covered on this record, it's interesting to hear Bon Jovi's creative development. You get in-Japan versions of their breakout hit "Runaway" and "In And Out Of Love," an early number soaked in the crunching guitar and hard-hitting rhythms of the band's pop-metal origins. The flip side finds these same guys as family men pouring themselves into introspective fare like "Just Older." In between are Zippo-worthy renditions of "Livin' On A Prayer," "Something For The Pain" and the title track. Best of all are surprise covers of "I Don't Like Mondays" (performed in London with Bob Geldolf on the 10th anniversary of Live Aid) and a ferocious "Rockin' In The Free World" recorded in South Africa shortly after Nelson Mandela's release.

Ultimate Collection
$12.65 Nedelle & Thom (Nedelle Torrisi and the Moore Brothers' Thom Moore) are the answer to Owl & the Pussycat. That group was also a male/female duet featuring an indie pop chanteuse, Lois Maffeo, and a member of the Moore Brothers, in this case Greg. Not surprisingly Summerland sounds a heck of a lot like Owl & the Pussycat, with sweet songs built around quirky chords and loads of low-key charm. Nedelle's dulcet tones are very Lois-like, and Thom's songs are much like his brother's structurally. There are some cheery songs like ...

| | An 80'S Metal Tribute To Journey CD (2006)
Ultimate Collection
$11.79 Tribute albums are a tricky business. On one hand, if an artist interprets a familiar song in a fresh way he or she can be accused of ruining a classic. On the other, if an artist re-creates the familiar song note for note he or she can be accused of having no imagination. It's a no-win situation. Released in 2006, An '80s Metal Tribute to Journey features new recordings of 13 beloved songs from the peak of Journey's gigantic mainstream success with vocalist Steve Perry. The stars here are vocalists, but many of them are more in the '70s arena rock and AOR vein than '80s metal. However, this fact just proves how the lines separating genres can be blurred. The biggest names among the featured vocalists are Mickey Thomas (Jefferson Starship, Starship), Bobby Kimball (Toto), Kip Winger (Winger), Tommy Shaw (Styx, Damn Yankees), Jack Russell (Great White), Robin McAuley (MSG), Kelly Hansen (Hurricane, Foreigner), and John Corabi (Mötley Crüe, Ratt). Musically speaking, the arrangements of virtually all of the songs are so close to the originals that it's scary. (There are crunchy, '80s-style rhythm guitar extras here and there.) Half of An '80s Metal Tribute to Journey was produced and performed -- with the exception of drums -- by former Yes member Billy Sherwood. He has previously produced AC/DC, Queen, and Pink Floyd tribute albums, among others. Ultimately, An '80s Metal Tribute to Journey lives or dies by the vocalists. Given Perry's distinctive style, the special guests had their work cut out for them. Sometimes a few of them strain to reach Perry's range, but they usually sound like themselves. Kimball tackles "Who's Crying Now," Winger handles "Send Her My Love" quite well, Shaw treats "Open Arms" respectfully, Russell cuts loose on "Any ...
