(5 Customer Reviews)
Often lumped unfairly into the same pop-punk bag as Green Day, and sometimes even dismissed as nothing more than A Blink-182 rip-off, Sum 41 definitively separates itself from the pack with DOES THIS LOOK INFECTED?. Sporting a level of sheer musicianship that dwarfs that of the aforementioned groups, the band powers through all 12 tracks with a machine-like efficiency and a thrash metalesque knack for rhythmic precision and complexity. In fact, there are instrumental passages here that could easily pass for MASTER OF PUPPETS-era Metallica or even vintage Anthrax.
To be sure, there are the usual heaping helpings of catchy melodies and Descendents-approved high harmonies throughout, but DOES THIS LOOK INFECTED? reveals an increased emphasis on the punk half of the punk-pop equation. Echoes of pioneering hardcore/metal hybrid bands like Killing Time, Leeway, and Bad Brains abound, and the record consequently has a tougher, more substantial feel than any of Sum 41's previous efforts.
Sum 41 album three, Does This Look Infected?, is much like Sum 41 album two, which was much like their lesser-known indie debut, Half Hour of Power. Which means, Does This Look Infected? sounds much like the work of Blink-182's snottier kid brothers, who are just in it for good times. Frankly, it's kind of a relief to be spared both the smutty double entendres and the self-pity, and while they still rely too much on processed guitar distortion and have sparkling productions, Sum 41 makes up for that cleanliness with vigorous performances and simple, catchy hooks. It's pretty fun, particularly since the whole affair is blissfully short at a few minutes over a half-hour, giving it a nice, punchy effect. There's nothing here that's unexpected, but it's delivered well, so it's a fun little record...but it's not much more than that, either. Rolling Stone (12/12/02, p.93) - "...there's an increased emphasis on metal....these songs aren't as slap-happy as they first seem..." Entertainment Weekly (11/29/02, pp.101-2) - "...Sum 41 more than hold their own against the current competition....There's an underlying metallic vibe here with lots of meaty riffs and galloping tempos, touches of hardcore, an even a bit of rapping..." - Rating: B- Q (01/03, p.113) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Sleek, pummelling anthems of teenage joy and confusion..." Please do not get hung up about the gory pic! Strip away the poppiness and you get screwed-up punk rock at its finest. You ever team-up between them and Iggy Pop? Better (Little Know It All)! Submitted by skank992002 (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Sum Great Stuff As their albums progress, Sum 41 just gets better and better. The only problem I have with Sum 41 is that i used to be really into them and now they're losing their punk rock image and are slowly sliding into really really fake punk. Other than that, this CD was refreshing Sum 41. It gets you hyped up and relieves anger at the same time with their screaming and crazy lyrics. This CD is really fun to listen to... hopefully Sum 41 won't become TOO MUCH FAKE PUNK. This CD isn't as original and daring as Half Hour to Power and it seems like Sum 41 should take more risks in their music instead of converting to uniform punk.

Does This Look Infected? CD music
$18.55 From Here To HereThis is the title that Samarpan suggested for the CD, since we are always Here, there is really nowhere else.On it, I am playing with some really hot musicians that I met in India, at the Osho Meditation Center in Pune. You can hear the touch of Indian music in the first and last piece with the traditional improvised introduction before the melody is introduced. The santour strikes out the melody gently with mallets that tap directly on the strings, and the tamboura provides the basis over which all the melodies take form. This CD is a real mix of different cultures. There is a beautiful piece by the wonderful German guitarist, Veet Sandeh, that has a soaring flute improvisation in it that is absolutely breathtaking. (I should know, since I was the flute player, and it was a magical take, one of those divine inspirations.) Our Italian composer and keyboard player Corrado, has a knock out singer doing his song 'Guri' that he wrote for his son, when he was in Brasil and his son was being born in Italy. We have a moment of pause when the overtone singer does a track that sounds like he is in his cave in Italy where he usually makes these resounding and energy balancing sounds. If you want to use the CD to help meditate, you can let your body move gently as it feels to, following the sounds, which frees up you energy to then finally sit in bliss. Now for the biographical information: I was trained as a professional musician, which involved practicing the flute for hours a day, playing in an orchestra and teaching in a University and College. Things changed radically when I met Osho, and found a new way to have fun in life! ...
