The years -- from 1969 to 1974 -- that Rod Stewart spent with Mercury Records found him at the very top of his game as a singer, writer, and arranger, and the five LPs he recorded for the label during this timespan all balance brilliantly between a soulful, loose rawness and carefully planned arrangements that merge with an immediacy that Stewart never came close to achieving again after he left the label. Several of Stewart's most inspired tracks, including the garbage can rumblings of "Cut Across Shorty," the fragmented but still somehow epic-feeling "Every Picture Tells a Story," and a beautiful version of Jimi Hendrix's "Angel," among others, are collected in this nicely paced set. It doesn't tell the whole Mercury story, though, since there are a lot of essential songs, like "Maggie May" and "Mandolin Wind," to name just two, that aren't found here, but what is included gives a nice glimpse at how good this guy really was once upon a time. ~ Steve Leggett
Import only compilation album featuring Rod Stewart's Mercury years, which are universally regarded as the most creative of his career. This collection covers a mixture of covers and originals. Among them are 'Every Picture Tells A Story', 'Lady Days', 'Street Fighting Man' (Rolling Stones) & 'Tomorrow Is A Long Time' (Bob Dylan). Universal. Having recorded four albums (one of which was the soundtrack WHAT'S UP TIGER LILY?) in slightly over a year, the band was on a shockingly strong roll here (which began to unravel after the release of HUMS, when Zal Yanovsky left). Then all of 22-years old, John Sebastian penned all the songs for HUMS. The album opens with "Lovin' You," a perfect ...

| | David Mead Indiana CD (2004) Bonus Track; Japan
Sweet Little Rock N Roller album
$36.09 Following a pair of terrific records filled with pop songwriting of the highest order, David Mead and RCA parted ways, leaving him without a label to release the completed Wherever You Are (produced by Stephen Hague). The layoff that ensued (three years between albums) led to a return to his childhood home of Nashville, a marriage, and the recording and release of Indiana, placing Wherever You Are on hold. Co-produced by Mead and cellist David Henry, Indiana, with its quiet, gentle tone and sense of transition, seems to be his most personal work to date. The acoustic guitars and strings that are at the center of the record's sound are the perfect backdrop for songs such as the weary and reflective "Nashville," the distant solitude of the title track, and the frayed hope of "Queensboro Bridge." And while the material here can have the feel of adult contemporary singer/songwriter fare, the depth of Mead's writing, both lyrically and melodically, steers it clear of any of the banalities that can creep into the genre. He never goes for cheap emotion or the obvious melodic turn, which is why some of the best moments here are the ones that seep in only after a few spins. Indiana may lack the immediate hookiness that made The Luxury of Time and Mine and Yours so irresistible, but it's every bit as strong and should prove to be just as enduring. ~ Brett Hartenbach
