This ten-track budget-priced compilation draws from the vaults of Sony Music for Top 40 hits from 1982. Some of the hitmakers from Sony's Columbia label -- Paul McCartney, Journey, Neil Diamond, and Willie Nelson -- don't seem to have been available for compiling, but the set does include the number one hit "Who Can It Be Now?" by Men at Work and the gold singles "867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone and "Rosanna" by Toto. The music is for the most part mainstream pop/rock, cleanly produced and catchy, with songs like Karla Bonoff's "Personally" and Dan Fogelberg's "Leader of the Band" leaning more toward soft rock, and Loverboy's "When It's Over" and Eddie Money's "Think I'm in Love" more toward hard rock. Men at Work and Paul Carrack have new wave tendencies, but nothing here is too edgy. By 1977 England was in the throes of punk, a musical revolution that held hugely successful "dinosaur" rock groups in contempt. So ANIMALS, the album Pink Floyd released that year, found the band as musically stripped down as they'd ever been. The overabundance of soundscapes, ethereal synths and lush textures of the past gave way to a leaner, more guitar-driven Floyd.
Yet thematically, Waters and co. still reached for the sky. Inspired in part by George Orwell's classic novel, "Animal Farm," ANIMALS divides humans into three categories--dogs, pigs and sheep--and features each classification in song. The dogs are merciless opportunists, grasping for success at any price; the pigs are pathetic, self-righteous tyrants; and the sheep are the mindless followers, being used by the dogs and pigs. This anthropomorphizing was Waters' view of the dehumanizing side of capitalism. And befitting such a lofty theme was the length of the album's three main pieces--none shorter than ten minutes.

Tiger Saw's Gimme Danger/Gimme Sweetness continues on the same dreamy path as their previous record, Blessed Are the Trials We Will Find, but at a slower rate. As has been probably stated many times before, Tiger Saw share a lot in common with such slowcore bands as Low, Ida, and the For Carnation. Gimme Danger/Gimme Sweetness is probably offering more of the latter, sweetness -- there really is not much danger here. The vocal merge of Dylan Metrano and Juliet Nelson tends to be a duel, working against each other -- the vocalists seem to be more successful when singing on their own. Tiger Saw draws on the formula of crawling at a slow, dreamy pace with sweet male/female harmonies, a pattern that Tiger Saw are great at but one that doesn't seem to challenge them or the listener. All that being said, the simple instrumentation and dragging pace against the languid vocals works in Tiger Saw's favor on this short release.
