Personnel: Stacey Kent (vocals); Jim Tomlinson (tenor saxophone); David Newton (piano); Colin Oxley (guitar); Dave Green (bass); Jeff Hamilton (drums). Stacey Kent has an attractive voice and a lightly swinging style. For Love Is...The Tender Trap -- her debut as a leader -- she is joined by tenor saxophonist Jim Tomlinson (who recalls Scott Hamilton and Stan Getz in spots), guitarist Colin Oxley, pianist David Newton, bassist David Green, and drummer Jeff Hamilton. Kent uplifts each of the familiar tunes slightly but does not add much of herself to the material. Certainly these versions of "I Didn't Know About You," "Comes Love," "East of the Sun," and "They All Laughed" would not qualify as definitive, or dwarf one's memory of earlier renditions. But Stacey Kent has potential for the future once she grows a bit more. A pleasing if insubstantial effort. ~ Scott Yanow

Love Is...The Tender Trap
$18.35 This DVD not only takes the best aspects of the most classic Morrissey recordings, but infuses them with the influence that only a production from legendary producer Tony Visconti can create. Add to the mix the beautiful string arrangements from Ennio Morricone, and this recording is unique for even Morrissey and unparalleled by anyone else. 12 tracks recorded in Rome at Forum Music are included.
Personnel: Morrissey (vocals); Alain Whyte (guitar, background vocals); Jesse Tobias, Boz Boorer (guitar); Michael Farrell (trumpet, trombone, piano, organ, keyboards, percussion); Gary Day (bass guitar); Matt Chamberlain (drums). Despite his status as one of the most iconic and enduring figures in alternative rock, Morrissey's solo output has been somewhat uneven, artistically speaking. But from its faux-classical album cover to its churning musical surfaces to its array of both bleak and celebratory themes, the artist's 2006 release, RINGLEADER OF THE TORMENTORS, shows that the subversive spirit driving Morrissey's unique perspective, arch posturing, and witty, literate lyrics is still alive and kicking. To boot, the album is produced by Tony Visconti, the masterful hand behind some of T. Rex and David Bowie's best efforts. Visconti's touch is evident on "I Will See You in Far Off Places," a heavy, rocking opener that moves with a sense of menace. This is contrasted by the beautiful "Dear God Please Help Me," a chamber-pop ballad orchestrated by legendary film composer Ennio Morricone. That song and the album's first single, "You Have Killed Me," are surprisingly joyful and life-affirming, at least for Morrissey, that is. (Fans needn't worry, however, the old morose Moz is still here on tunes like "Life is a Pigsty"). All told, RINGLEADER is one of Morrissey's most vital statements in some time. Few comebacks are ever as expertly executed as Morrissey's 2004 return to the stage, You Are the Quarry. It may have not sold gangbusters but it was certainly a hit, proving that he still had legions of devoted fans who would follow through hell and high water (or at the very least, ...

Love Is...The Tender Trap
$22.79 Sunshine Music/HAMADA, Takasi 1. Morning Coffee (2003) EbAbCFCEb, Capo 2 (3:40) Firstly composed as the song called "Class Reunion Song" (2003), and later I arranged it for guitar solo. I love Chet Atkins guitar style, and it has a major impact on this tune. I previously released it as in "special CDR" in 2003, but of course I prefer the version of this CD. 2. Madiana (1932) EbAbCFCEb, Capo 1 (3:37) This runba was written by Maiotte Almaby (1890-1939), composer and singer of West Indies though based in Paris. I heard it in CD "Biguine, Valse et Mazurka Creoles (1930-1943)". I made it very simple from original version, but I always feel good to play this graceful song. 3. Lovely Matampusi (1996) EADGBE, No Capo (4:08) I wrote it under the influence of "William Powell" (1989) by Leo Kottke, one of my guitar heroes. Once I planned to be in my other CD "Orion", but gave it up because of the CD running time, and I have previously released it as in "special CDR" in 2002. "Matampusi" means headband in Ainu, which I used to wear from younger days. 4. Savoia Rag (2004) EbAbCFCEb, Capo 3 (5:23) My original classic rag in 4 sections, which was released in Japan Ragtime Club omnibus CD Vol.1 "Maple Leaf Rag" (2004). It's my favorite work, so here I present this re-recorded version. "Savoia" was the name of a coffee house in Otaru, my home town. I once heard it was the place at where my parents met for the first time, so I imagined this Romantic mood. 5. Absence Without Notice (1997-1999) BGBEBD, No Capo (2:16) Totally brief minor tune, which is unusual for me. Here I play the 12 string guitar, which hasn't be played since my first CD "Ragtime Guitar" (1992). This tuning is half-dropped from original "CAbCFCEb". ...
