Singles Collection album for sale Product Description
Singles Collection album for sale by Peggy Lee was released Dec 10, 2002 on the Capitol/EMI label. The deluxe 4-CD SINGLES COLLECTION comes with a 71-page booklet including an essay by Will Friedwald and a complete singles discography by Ivan Santiago as well as rare photos and LP covers. THE SINGLES COLLECTION was nominated for the 2004 Grammys Award for Best Album Notes and for Best Historical Album. This comprehensive overview of Peggy Lee's singles output traces her development from the ex-big band singer of 1944's "You Was Right, Baby" (recorded more or less as a demo) to the established chanteuse she became in the '60s, covering the songs of youthful pop stars such as "Something" by the Beatles or Tim Hardin's "Misty Roses." Along the way, she has been conducted by Frank Sinatra ("The Folks Who Live on the Hill"), employed Randy Newman as an arranger ("Is That All There Is"), recorded with Louis Prima's Orchestra ("Yeah Yeah Yeah"), and rearranged a Duke Ellington theme into a hit song ("I'm Gonna Go Fishin'"). Singles Collection CD music is a 4-disc set with 110 songs. ...See Full Description

Herbie Mann Memphis Underground CD (1969)
Singles Collection CD music Much of the record is made up of funky, one-chord vamps, and this has its charms. First of all, the Memphis rhythm section is first rate. Drummer Gene Christman lays down some tight beats that really support the soloists, all of whom play soulful, bluesy improvisations throughout. Vibraphonist Roy Ayers plays the jazziest licks, mixing in some advanced harmonic vocabulary with his otherwise pentatonic (rock-influenced) licks. Well-known soul hits "Hold On, I'm Comin'" and "Chain of Fools" are covered on this jam album, as is the traditional "Battle Hymn of the Republic." Overall, this disc has a strong late-'60's feel to it, which proves to be an endearing virtue.
Flutist Herbie Mann's career has taken him in a variety of musical directions. This 1969 studio session is a perfect example of the range of Mann's stylistic interests. MEMPHIS UNDERGROUND is a clean break from bebop; in fact, this music could hardly be called jazz. It is really groove music, with a dash of Southern rock and country added to the mix.
Live Recording
Personnel: Herbie Mann (flute); Roy Ayers (vibraphone, congas); Bobby Wood (acoustic & electric piano); Bobby Emmons (organ); Larry Coryell, Sonny Sharrock, Reggie Young (guitar); Tommy Cogbill, Mike Leech, Miroslav Vitous (Fender bass); Gene Christman (drums).

Jimmy Smith Organ Grinder Swing CD (1965)
Singles Collection album for sale Using the monicker 'Incredible' was no flash banner, it was true. Smith defined the Hammond organ as a jazz instrument and milked and bled it to its limit. The sub-credit for guitarist Kenny Burrell and drummer Grady Tate is also well deserved. This is the ultimate groovy, smokey jazz trio record that Smith made. The title track has been used for countless radio trailers over the years, while the often covered Duke Ellington classic, 'Satin Doll', is given extra special effort. Burrell has worked with Smith more than any other musician. His mellow tone and Smith's treble notes blend like cucumber and salmon.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on June 15 & 16, 1965. Originally released on Verve (8628).
Liner Note Author: Al Young.
Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (06/14/1965/06/15/1965).

Kermit Ruffins Swing This CD (1999)
Singles Collection buy CD music New Orleans trumpeter/vocalist Ruffins concentrates on good time jive and swing, with a big band taste and second-line influence on this CD with his group, the Barbeque Kings. His bright trumpet sound and slightly Louis Armstrong-inflected vocal style is complemented by his band of fellow young jazzmen, the most distinctive being trombonist Corey Henry. Ruffins wrote four of the 12 selections: "Treme Second Line" (Blow Da Whistle)," "Can't Take My Baby Nowhere," and "Hide the Reefer" are silly goof numbers, the latter with a Gene Krupa rhythm. The title track is a bopping instrumental where Ruffins, Henry, and tenor saxophonist Roderick Paulin get to blow a little. Ed Frank's "Fruit Punch" is also a swinging instrumental with promising solos. Ruffins cops Eddie Jefferson's lyric on "Things Are Getting Better," adding a peanut vendor line. He sings "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Bucket's Got a Hole in It" with that self-effaced Satchmo charm. Additional horns turn the ensemble into a big band sound for "Ma, He's Makin' Eyes at Me" and "But Not for Me." Six-year-old Neshia Ruffins and seven-year-old Christina Ruffins join four-year-old Milan Arriola on a truly kiddish "This Little Light of Mine," and the CD kicks with a true New Orleans trad classic, "Bogalusa Strut." As he matures, Ruffins should grow out of camp into pure musical value. This is a quite an entertaining recording. ~ Michael G. Nastos

Jerry Lee Lewis Another Place Another Time/She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye CD (2002)
Singles Collection album for sale Raven's 2002 two-fer CD reissue of Jerry Lee Lewis' 1968 album Another Place Another Time and 1970's She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye contains the added bonus of six tracks -- over half the album -- from 1969's She Still Comes Around (To Love What's Left of Me). By doing this, the disc transcends typical two-fer status (which, frankly, would have been enough, since these two albums are so tremendous, their first CD release is something to celebrate) and becomes the best single-disc collection of Jerry Lee's country material. There have been other discs that tackle the same recordings for Smash (all unfortunately out of print as of this writing), but their scope was a little broader, including many of his '70s hits for Mercury as well as Smash sides unheard here. On the surface, this may seem to be a drawback -- more is usually better, after all -- but the narrow focus of this two-fer highlights his peak as pure country singer, when he found his voice and ran with it. He made great music after She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye, to be sure, and had plenty of hits, but these three albums are classics, bristling with excitement and infused with hardcore honky tonk pathos. It's not just that Jerry Lee sounds great on these songs -- he rarely sounded bad, after all -- but it's that the songs are perfectly suited for him, and the performances are as bold and robust as he is. Also, all the key country hits -- "What's Made Milwaukee Famous (Has Made a Loser Out of Me)," "Another Place Another Time," "She Still Comes Around (To Love What's Left of Me)," "Once More With Feeling," "She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye" -- are here, and the depth of quality of this material is richer than on some hit collections. These are not just three of the best Jerry Lee albums, they're three of the best and hardest country music ever waxed, and even if one of the records isn't here in its entirety (the best cuts are, though), this is the best way to currently hear them. It's an absolutely essential collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
