David Holmes, famed DJ turned crossover artist, presents the soundtrack to Analyze That - the sequel to the hugely successful Analyze This, starring Robert DeNiro, Billy Crystal and Lisa Kudrow. This upbeat jazzy score has a wink and smirk feel similar to his previous soundtrack, Oceans Eleven. TVT. 2002.
Original score composed by David Holmes. Personnel: Stephen Hilton (guitar, keyboards, programming); Phil Mossman (guitar); Dave Jensen (saxophone); John Wheeler (trombone); Scott Kinsey (piano, electric piano, organ, keyboards). Recording information: RPM Sound Studios, New York, NY. David Holmes' soundtrack for Analyze That, the sequel to Harold Ramis, Billy Crystal, and Robert DeNiro's hit mobster and shrink comedy Analyze This, finds the Irish composer operating on autopilot, or at least below the standard he set for himself with the distinctive music he wrote for Out of Sight and Ocean's 11. Tracks such as "Opening Credits," "Sushi Bar," and "Have a Nice Day" have some of the funky, moody appeal of Holmes' better soundtrack work, but just aren't especially memorable in and of themselves. Granted, this music is supposed to function as a backdrop to the film's action, but outside of that context, it's not an especially interesting listening experience. Now and then, however, Holmes' creativity bubbles to the surface, particularly on "Restaurant Background," an ironic take on swanky restaurant Muzak that ends up being one of the score's more distinctive pieces because of its intentional facelessness, and on the perky, pseudo-lounge music of "Car Showroom." "Strip Club," with its breathy female vocals and wah-wah guitars, is an effective audio caricature; throughout the album, Holmes seems to be the most inspired by sending up different styles of cheesy music and with scoring the film's climactic scenes. "Drive to the Heist," "The Chase," and "The Heist" are prime examples of the Lalo Schifrin-meets-Isaac Hayes style Holmes brought to his other scores, and his die-hard fans won't be disappointed by these tracks. Overall, though, Analyze That is missing that extra sparkle of Holmes' best work, and the soundtrack's somewhat short length of just over 30 minutes adds to its slightly disappointing feel. ~ Heather Phares

Analyze That Soundtrack
$20.29 A Billboard "Critics Choice" pick!Downtown New York-based singer/songwriter Mary Ann Farley debuts with an album that showcases her sharp songwriting, her ear for clever arrangements, and a voice that runs the gamut from a vulnerable quaver to a full-throated wail--sometimes in the same line...Whether supported by a full band or just her guitar, Farley comes across as a vital new talent. —Paul Verna, Billboard (Critics' Choice pick) Daddy's Little Girl easily leads the pack in disturbing analyses of boy/girl culture... Now composing on guitar, Farley's moved away from Kate Bush riffs and discovered a bold grace that ignores airy-faeries in favor of scary monsters. —J.R. Taylor, New York Press New Jersey's own Ani DiFranco presents a bittersweet blast at the shackles of love, work and image... This Hoboken songstress' bittersweet look at the absurdities of life makes her independent debut disc, Daddy's Little Girl, as good as anything heard at Lilith Fair. —Robert Makin, Best Female Artist, 1997 in The Courier News, Bridgewater, NJ Waifish girl-rock has become an overcrowded field [but] Mary Ann Farley stands apart from this parade of adenoids...Indeed, her songs are about waifishness, and they explore the territory with a dragging nonchalance that is both engaging and chilling. The arrangements alternate between lush and spare in a method reminiscent of Siouxie and the Banshees, with repeated allusions to feminine malevolence...A rich and satisfying record start to finish. —Mark Keating , #4 in Sound Views, New York, NY Mary Ann Farley won't sit still.
