| | New Order Retro CD New Order Discography of CDs
(4 Customer Reviews)
One of many New Order compilations, 2002's RETRO distinguishes itself as a thematically arranged four-disc box set that covers the dance-friendly U.K. alt-rock band's 1981-2001 output. With all CDs arranged non-chronologically, the "Pop" disc features catchy usual-suspect singles such as "Blue Monday" and "True Faith," while "Fan" delves into revered lesser-known tracks such as the propulsive "Procession" and the chiming "Leave Me Alone." "Club," not surprisingly, consists largely of remixed tracks (including a Chemical Brothers-tweaked version of "Here to Stay"), and "Live" presents concert performances (most notably a '81 recording of "In a Lonely Place") selected by, of all people, Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie. Far from a tidy collection, RETRO does touch on many fine moments by the beloved British act, though those looking for a more, well, orderly set may want to seek out '05's SINGLES.
A different kind of boxed set from a different kind of band. The career-spanning Retro fills four CDs with tracks selected by influential New Order fans who've followed the band for years. Disc One gathers the singles, selected by journalist Miranda Sawyer. Disc Two collects album tracks, selected by journalist John McCready. Disc Three is the remixes, selected by Hacienda DJ Mike Pickering. Disc Four is unreleased live tracks, selected by New Order & Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie. Includes an extensive booklet & digipak box featuring new artwork by renowned designer Peter Saville. Rhino. 200.
New Order: Bernard Sumner (vocals, guitar): Gillian Gilbert (keyboards); Peter Hook (bass); Stephen Morris (drums).
Producers include: New Order, Martin Hannett, Arthur Baker, John Robie, Stephen Hague.
Rolling Stone (1/23/03, p.68) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...For all of New Order's studio elegance and club-accessible mutability, the live disc is radically, raucously raw." Spin (3/03, p.120) - "...You'll be surprised at how indelible the singles remain, how moving the early stuff is, and how hot the remixes are..." Entertainment Weekly (1/3/03, p.64) - "...This beautiful box finally gives the post-Ian Curtis hitmakers the veneration they deserve." - Rating: A Q (1/03, pp.128-9) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...RETRO preserves the enigma and fends off the fossilisation implicit in any retrospective..." Uncut (01/03, p.130) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Their musical legacy is beyond reach: untouchable, unimpeachable, immortal..."

Excellent Collection This is a great collection of the full gamet of New Order...everything that any fan would possibly need. Submitted by a reviewer (Chicago, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Possibly the most pointless boxed set ever! New Order couldnt decide what to with the boxset, so basically they said the heck with it. This set does nothing well except as a sampling of New Order over the years. If you are a long time there are few reasons to get this other than a mildly interesting live disc. If you are a casual fan, this will seem like a waste of money.
Nothing is remastered. No rare tracks except for a couple of non-essential dance remixes. Did include the mediocre "Brutal" thou, from The Beach soundtrack, but its hardly worth the pricetag.
Its like somebody put a bunch of New Order CDs into the player and hit random play!
Buy it only if you love New Order and just have to have it, New order is unique, that is no question! Submitted by Robby (United States of the Bush Empire) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
NOT ENOUGH RARITIES! All the tracks on the first two discs, and half the third disc are previously available on the official albums and other compliations, mainly "Substance" which should be the starting point for anyone exploring New Order for the first time. I love New Order, but unlike their sister box set, Joy Division's Heart and Soul which does include everything a die-hard could ever possibly want...this one DOES NOT include ALL the B-SIDES (where are Don't Do It, Vicious Circle, MTO???)many important rarities (Factory giveaways, Salavation tracks), important remixes (Touched 12" version, Original version of Ceremony, Perfecto mixes of True Faith, World etc) and DOES NOT INCLUDE any PREVIOUSLY UNREALEASED STUDIO TRACKS (they do exist!). The booklet is FABULOUS and the music is first-rate, but the lack of rarities makes this is a serverly missed opportunity for one of the most important UK bands of the last 20 years.
