Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English Bette Midler stars in the title role of "Stella," a 1990's update of two previous tearjerkers. Brassy barmaid Stella Claire charms the pants off blueblood Stephen Dallas, and eventually they have a child. Because of their different values and personalities, Stella and Stephen do not marry. She, however, decides to raise their daughter, Jenny, by herself. Although the feisty mother and Jenny have a warm, if sometimes tense, relationship, Stella realizes she must give away her girl to a wealthy man if Jenny is to enjoy all that life has to offer. This, however, would mean parting company with her lovely daughter. "Stella" is the second remake of the much loved tearjerker "Stella Dallas," first made in 1925 with Belle Bennett in the lead and later remade in 1937 with Barbara Stanwyck.
Color by Medallion; Technicolor prints. Stella Reviews: "...A tear-jerker....No one does tacky quite as well as Midler. Her character here is drenched in it..."

$11.39 MERMAIDS is the story of the turbulent relationship between a flamboyant, outrageous mom (Cher) and her two daughters (Winona Ryder and Christina Ricci) who just want a normal, stable life. Socially rebellious and provocative, the mother is reluctant to settle down, even at the request of her two daughters (one of whom, despite being Jewish, longs to enter a convent). The unusual family has moved 18 times in the last 15 years, usually whenever Mrs. Flax senses she might have to commit to a relationship. But this time the girls hope the family will stay put, and their conflicting desires lead to a final, near-tragic result.

Stella movie DVD
$6.89 Bette Midler and Woody Allen star in director Paul Mazursky's comedy as a professional Los Angeles couple--Deborah (Midler) is the author of a best-selling self-help book about marriage and has been wed to successful lawyer Nick (Allen) for 16 years. They live a high-pressure professional life, complete with matching Saabs, two kids, a house in the hills, beepers, cell phones, and a constant barrage of client phone calls. To celebrate their anniversary, they decide to embark on a spending spree at the Beverly Center mall. But while there, each makes a startling revelation that rocks their marriage. Nick, following advice from his wife's book, kicks things off by announcing he's been having an affair. Deborah, staggered by the news, rebounds by requesting a divorce. The spoiled couple reconciles--until the author admits that she's been unfaithful herself. As Nick and Deborah wade their way through the mall, dodging a particularly annoying mime (clown Bill Irwin in a hilarious role), mariachi bands, and Christmas-carolling rappers, they are forced to realize the mistakes they've made along the way--all the while juggling the pros and cons of their marriage, dividing assets, and shooting off rapid rounds of compliments and insults. Midler and Allen make a terrific and suitably neurotic pair in Mazursky's hilarious satire of an outlandish Los Angles marriage.

Stella DVD
$7.05 The script of FANCY PANTS, based on the popular novel by Harry Leon Wilson, provides stars Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, and director George Marshall with the fantastically slapstick and silly material with which all three excel. Hope plays struggling actor Arthur Tyler, who is hired by a penniless British gentleman to act as his butler in order to impress nouveau riche Americans Agatha Floud (Lucille Ball) and her mother, Mrs. Floud. Hope's failures at maintaining even the smallest retinue of décor forces the British gent to let him go, but the Flouds are so enamored with Tyler that they hire him to work as their own butler in New Mexico. When Tyler arrives, he is confused as a visiting Earl, and is forced to maintain this charade when President Theodore Roosevelt comes to town. With New Mexico hoping the president's visit will help them achieve statehood, the political status of thousands rests firmly on Tyler's bumbling inability to be either British or royal. Meanwhile, Tyler and Aggie Floud are falling for each other, providing several fabulous scenes in which the two comic geniuses work their magic on each other.
