Based on Daphne du Maurier's classic novel, this Masterpiece Theatre adaptation stars Emilia Fox (THE PIANIST) as Mrs. De Winter, the second wife of the aging aristocrat Maxim De Winter (Dance). Mrs. De Winter, a young middle class girl, met her husband while he was traveling, and the two almost instantly fell in love, even though Maxim was still grieving over his wife, Rebecca, that died only one year earlier. The two impulsively decide to get married and enjoy a blissful romance until the two return to Manderlay, Maxim's estate, and Mrs. De Winter finds that Rebecca still has a strange hold on everyone there, especially the sinister housekeeper Mrs. Danvers (Rigg), who goes so far as to refer to her as the second Mrs. De Winter. A chilling gothic thriller, REBECCA is a captivating film made all the more suspenseful by Ms. Rigg's superb performance as the dastardly Mrs. Danvers.

5 stars The Ghost of Mrs. De Winter
This beautiful period piece is shot in Monaco and England. Emilia Fox shines as the naive, orphaned girl with whom Max De Winter falls in love. Diana Rigg does a chilling turn as the cold and sinister Mrs. Danvers. Everytime she comes on the screen I still get a knot in my stomach. Still, you have to feel sorry for the lost soul. Recommended highly.

4 stars Excellent performances.
Very well made version of the Daphne Du Marier novel with very good performances by the three leads. Diana Rigg is surprising as Mrs. Danvers. I strongly recommend it.

4 stars Captivating
This movie is amazingly done. It keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end. Each actor is well suited for the part and the direction is great. It gets a little long at the end, but when over, all 180 minutes are worth it. Definitely a suspense film that belongs in every library.

This documentary of the Rolling Stones' 1969 US tour has become a legendary, harrowing symbol of the tragic demise of the "Peace and Love" era. After a successful tour across the United States, the Rolling Stones gave a free December concert at Altamont Speedway in California with the Grateful Dead (not seen performing), Ike and Tina Turner, Jefferson Airplane, and the Flying Burrito Brothers (all seen performing one song each). The poorly planned show was fraught with problems from its inception. The band unwisely selected the Hells Angels ...

At a time when seemingly every band with access to an analog synthesizer and a tube of hair gel was aping the New Wave sounds of the early 1980s, NOUVELLE VAGUE put a unique spin on the phenomenon. Their self-titled album is full of covers of classic tunes by the Cure, Modern English, Depeche Mode, et al. The striking twist, however, lies in the fact that all the songs are performed in old-school bossa nova mode, the lyrics delivered in a vintage Astrud Gilberto style. The cooing, breathy vocals and gentle acoustic guitar rhythms successfully transmogrify not only the pop-friendly confections of the aforementioned ensembles, but some edgier material as well. One hasn't truly lived ...

The second entry from sui generis singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his absurdly ambitious project to make a record for every state in America outdistances even 2003's superb GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN in scope and beauty. A sweeping paean to the Lincoln state, ILLINOIS weaves together history, personal confession, and detail-filled scenarios with chamber folk, expansive orchestral pop, and back-porch pastoral settings for a stunningly progressive indie gem that sound like Brian Wilson, Stereolab, and Neil Young holding hands in heaven. Remarkably, in its intricate, gorgeously crafted surfaces, ILLINOIS lives up to its aims. In addition to its symphonic grandeur, the album also showcases Stevens's heartland folk, and some of the album's most shimmering moments are its most spare. "John Wayne Gacy, Jr.," for instance, is an absorbing narrative that features Stevens's sweet tenor couched by guitar, piano, and backing vocals. "Casimir Pulaski Day," similarly, rides a rootsy banjo and guitar groove while Stevens unfurls image-rich lyrics over a lilting melody. Witty, audacious, and moving, ILLINOIS manages to be spiritual, entertaining, and educational all at once, resulting in an utterly unique conceptual and musical statement. The first new album since Seven Swans and the second in his 52 state series. Sufjan is one of the leading figures ...

With a concept that could have failed on so many levels in lesser hands, Ry Cooder stuns once again in MY NAME IS BUDDY and demonstrates why he is one of America's most adventurous musicians. His chosen material is a loose collection of animal character sketches--the titular Buddy is a cat--based on labor struggles and the lower class in Depression-era America. Think of it as Woody Guthrie meets Beatrix Potter. While an odd construct on page for a man that jammed with Beefheart, the Stones, and the Buena Vista Social Club, MY NAME IS BUDDY flies with every track. The stellar cast of musicians includes the brothers Seeger, Van Dyke Parks, Jim Keltner, Paddy Moloney of the Chieftains, and Flaco Jimenez, and grounds the fairy tale atmosphere with musical blood and guts. The ensembles tear through early-19th-century forms (country blues, bluegrass, and old-time arrangements) with a rollicking flair. Photographer: Susan Titelman. Personnel: Ry Cooder (vocals, guitar, bajo sexto, banjo, mandola, keyboards); Ry Cooder (bass instrument); Buddy Red Cat (vocals, guitar); Roland White (vocals, ...

Director Robert Zemeckis revolutionized the art of animated film in 1998's WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT by dropping cartoon characters into the same frame with flesh-and-blood actors. In THE POLAR EXPRESS, live action and animation have merged seamlessly, resulting in sparkling super-realism. A landmark technique Zemeckis and his Sony Pictures Imageworks team call "Performance Capture" perfectly suits the tenor of this wondrous children's Christmas story by Chris Van Allsburg. A disillusioned little boy, just old enough to doubt the existence of Santa Claus, has the adventure of a lifetime one fateful Christmas Eve. Clad in his pajamas, he climbs aboard a magic train to the North Pole, driven by a kindly train conductor (voiced by Tom Hanks who starred in both of Zemeckis's Academy-Award winning films FORREST GUMP and CASTAWAY). Among myriad jaw-dropping moments, the train plummets brakeless through crystalline ...

John Cassavetes's A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE is an emotionally devastating drama that charts the mental disintegration of a California housewife. Mabel Longhetti (Gena Rowlands) has no emotional or creative outlets. Instead, she pours all her energy into her family, spending her days waiting for her husband Nick (Cassavetes regular and COLUMBO star Peter Falk) to arrive home from work, and anxiously awaiting her children's return from school. This dependence causes Mabel to suffer a nervous breakdown, forcing her to spend time in a mental hospital. Meanwhile, Nick struggles mightily to keep his family together. When Mabel returns six months later, dazed and shaken, a "welcome home" party threatens to trigger another collapse. As ...
