| | Golden Years Of The Soviet New Jazz, Vol. 3 CDs (2002) Import; Boxed Set
'S Wonderful
$38.59 4-CD box set contains over five hours of music, and all the pieces in the set are previously unreleased material, except for one track by Vladimir Chekasin's Big Band. Also features music from Homo Liber, Sainkho Namchylak, Trio-O, Andrew Solovyev, Igor
This is a limited edition of 750 copies. Performers include: Vladimir Chekasin Big Band, Homo Liber, Sainkho Namchylak, Trio-O, Andrew Solovyev, Igor Grigoriev, Vlad Makarav. The third installment in Leo Feigin's series of quadruple CD sets documenting Soviet avant-garde jazz in the '80s delivers once again an overwhelming dose of good, challenging music. Only 40 minutes of the five hours of music have been previously available. Disc one, featuring Homo Liber, is the strangest and most interesting. This duo, formed of Yuri Yukechev and Vladimir Tolkachev, has left a short discography, which gives this disc extra value. Their music jumps from classical chamber to free jazz in the nick of time. "In Memory of Andrey Tarkovsky" stands out as a particularly brilliant tribute, even if it avoids the sparseness of Tarkovsky's films (on the other hand, it does pastiche Edward Artemiev's soundtracks in one section). The second disc is devoted to Ganelin Trio's Vladimir Chekasin and his big band projects. Bombastic ...

'S Wonderful
$13.25 Live Recording
Personnel: Robyn Hitchcock (vocals, guitar, harmonica, bass); Jon Brion (keyboards). Recorded between 2001 & 2002. Personnel: Robyn Hitchcock (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Jon Brion (keyboards). Recording information: Gravity shack, London, England (04/2002); Peter's Roof (04/2002); Pete's Roof (04/2002); The Gravity Shack, London, England (04/2002). Photographers: Michele Noach; Tom Oldham; Robyn Hitchcock. Some of Robyn Hitchcock's best work in his career has been on his solo acoustic albums. It therefore comes as no surprise that Luxor is on par with both Eye and the classic I Often Dream of Trains, although it is a bit darker in tone than either of those discs. This collection offers more examples of Hitchcock's winning mix of silly and sublime lyrics backed with exotically tuned acoustic guitars. Numbers such as "The Sound of Sound," "Round Song," and "One L" are familiar and fresh all at once, as Hitchcock subtly rewrites variations of his own catalog. There is not only a strong sense of his own musical past evident, but also the past of pop music in general; ...
