$16.29 Roger Corman directed this big-crab classic in which a crew of scientists investigates a nuclear fallout-stricken atoll in the Pacific. There isn't a sign of life on the island, but the researchers hear voices calling to them at night, and when they investigate they are promptly clawed and eaten. It seems these gigantic mutant crabs absorb the intelligence of their victims and can speak in their voices. Russell Johnson (the Professor from GILLIGAN'S ISLAND) is a demolition expert who manages to fall in love with betrothed biologist Martha Hunter (Pamela Duncan) before the crab business gets too critical, which isn't long. Mel Welles, Leslie Bradley, and Richard Garland costar as concerned scientists and future brain food. Corman works efficiently from an intelligent script by Charles B. Griffith, achieving a brisk pace that masks the low budget. Beach Dickerson ...

$7.45 A gangster named Harold (Anthony Carbone), his moll, Mary-Belle (Betsy Jones Moreland), and his lawyer, Martin (Robert Towne), are scuba diving in Puerto Rico when H-bombs wipe out the world. Since these three happened to be underwater at the time, they are the sole survivors and get to wander the empty streets and engage in lots of dialogue about humankind's future. Eventually the men fight over who will mate with Mary-Belle and rebuild civilization. Martin is afraid if she spawns with the thuggish Harold, the world will be repopulated with violent people doomed to a future of more bomb building. On Harold's side is the strong-survive theory of Darwinian natural selection. At least the three get to enjoy some crowd-free shopping before the inevitable showdown. This was the first filmed script by costar Towne (credited as Edward Wain), who would ...

She Gods Of Shark Reef review
$15.05 Mel Gibson (BRAVEHEART, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST) tackles the downfall of Mayan civilization in his latest turn as writer/director. Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) and his fellow villagers lead a peaceful life in the forest until a savage, unprovoked attack turns their world upside down. After hiding his pregnant wife and young son from the invaders, Jaguar Paw joins in the fight, only to be taken prisoner with the rest of the survivors. Uncertain of what the future holds and taken from his home to a thriving metropolis that might as well be a foreign country, Jaguar Paw has just one goal--to return to his wife and child. Jaguar Paw's journey is a coming-of-age saga running the gamut of love, loss, courage, and redemption.
Filmed in Mexico with a cast of indigenous Americans speaking in the Yucatec dialect, this is a tale filled with contrasts. Muted greens and browns define the forest village while the city is awash in bright colors. The wealthy live in opulence, sporting elaborate jewelry, clothing, and hairdos while the villagers wear twig and bone ornaments. The villagers respect both life and nature, but the rulers of the great stone city condone violence in an effort to appease their gods. Gibson's point is clear: the more "advanced" society is corrupt and unrepentant, while the more primitive Mayans have far greater faith and humanity. Gibson also drives home the recurring theme of rebirth with symbolism, including rain, pregnancy, and the arrival of Christianity. Beautifully filmed by Dean Semler and scored by James Horner, ...
