| | Christian Howes Jazz On Sale CD Christian Howes Discography of CDs
On his stunning Khaeon label debut, Columbus, Ohio-born jazz violinist Christian Howes presents an acoustic trio recorded in Madrid in Nov. 2001. On this collection of originals and jazz standards by Thelonious Monk ("Blue Monk"), Bill Evans ("Very Early
Personnel includes: Christian Howe (violin). Recorded in 2001. Some call this young traditional jazz violinist the "Jimi Hendrix of the violin," and the wild experimenting and intense playing skills Christian Howes demonstrates on this inventive but slightly uneven disc bear out this genius-like tag. On Jazz on Sale, his playing and ensembling with upright bassist Pablo Martin and pianist Federico Lechner is fascinating and compelling at times, but he can't quite decide if he's doing a trio date of classic ballads (Miles Davis' "Blue in Green" is all moody and mournful sweetness, played very straightforwardly) or just jamming like he's having a happy little musical seizure (the frenetic, avant-garde madness of "Blue Monk Part 1.") The original "Amor Casi Imposible" aches like a lushly romantic film score chamber piece, while the title track is a wacked-out piece in search of a single tempo. One of the more unique elements on this disc is Howes' use of a baritone violin to create a deeper emotional experience, which of course works better on the tracks that otherwise engage us emotionally. He scores points for blistering insanity, but to find a larger audience, his genius needs to be honed just a bit more. ~ Jonathan Widran

$13.59 Personnel: Houston Person (tenor saxophone); James Chirillo (guitar); John Di Martino, John Di Martino Quartet (piano); Lewis Nash (drums). Audio Mixer: Rudy Van Gelder. Liner Note Author: Sid Gribetz. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (06/23/2009). Photographer: John Abbott . Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established by Ben Webster in its soul-drenched tone, but is not as vocally pronounced or vibrato driven. The quite capable pianist John DiMartino is the one whose more enunciated ...

Jazz On Sale
$8.89 Original music composed by Richard Rodgers. Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. All tracks have been digitally remastered. Composer: Richard Rodgers. Lyricist: Oscar Hammerstein II. British budget reissue label Prism Leisure takes advantage of European copyright law, which puts recordings over 50 years old into the public domain, to release its own version of the 1949 original Broadway cast album of South Pacific. Theoretically, it should not be available in the U.S., where Sony still claims copyright on the recording, originally issued on Columbia Records and still in print, but upon release the Prism version was for sale through American mail-order firms for only about $8. For that, you get an adequate-sounding, but clearly inferior mastering made from secondary sources and poor annotations in which, amazingly enough, Oscar Hammerstein II's name is misspelled. You also get four bonus tracks, pop versions of songs from the show by Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Perry Como. Of course, the result cannot be recommended over the full-priced Columbia version, but it's a lot cheaper. ~ William Ruhlmann The original soundtrack recording of the film South Pacific, released by RCA Victor Records in 1958, entered the public domain on January 1, 2009, in Europe, where a 50-year copyright limit on recordings prevails, and the ASWAS imprint of Delta Leisure Group, Plc., lost no time in issuing its own unlicensed version of the album. It's a no-frills budget release mastered from a record, but it boasts the entire 16 tracks from the RCA album, plus six extra performances of songs from South Pacific by the likes of Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, and Peggy Lee, which makes it considerably longer than the legitimate version. South Pacific was a movie in which much of the principal cast had its singing voices dubbed, and that leads to a certain confusion in the credits here. The performer credits on the back of the album actually are correct with regard to who's really singing: Giorgio Tozzi sings the part of Emile de Becque ("Some Enchanted Evening," "This Nearly Was Mine"), even if the album cover shows the actor Rossano Brazzi with Mitzi Gaynor in his arms (Gaynor does her own singing as Nellie Forbush); Bill Lee sings Lt. Cable ("Younger Than Springtime," "Carefully Taught"), although the actor John Kerr's name appears on the front cover; Muriel Smith sings Bloody Mary ("Bali Ha'i," "Happy Talk"), with no acknowledgement at all that Juanita Hall played the part onscreen; and "Dites-Moi" ...
