 An early Sherlock Holmes movie
This low budget Sherlock Holmes movie from 1933 bears the title of Conan Doyle's first story about the famous detective. The plot in the movie however has almost nothing to do with that book. None the less the plot and various characters are very much in the style of the original written Sherlock Holmes material with members of the secret society "Scarlet Ring" being murdered one by one. Reginald Owen is not doing a bad job as Holmes. Oddly they seem to have put Holmes in 221A instead of 221B Baker Street. The first half hour or so the movie maintains a good tone of old-fashioned murder mystery but gradually a general lack of pace and energy diminish viewing pleasure. It all becomes a bit dull, slow and mechanical. Unfortunately the ending does not succeed in speeding things up. The movie certainly has charm and on the whole the results are not bad. Still it is not a very satisfying movie to watch. The sound quality is very poor. Mostly for Sherlock Holmes collectors.
