A magnificent piece of archive scouring, Live Instrumentals 1969 was recorded during the month or so that Affinity vocalist Linda Hoyle spent recuperating from an operation on her vocal chords, leaving bandmates Mo Foster, Mike Jupp, Lynton Naiff, and Grant Serpell to fill their time with a month-long residency at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London. Nine of the tracks here, including tumultuous jazz-rock versions of the Beatles' "A Day in the Life" (a staple of the like-minded Brian Auger's repertoire around the same time), and "Fever" were recorded there; four more were taken from a period-radio broadcast, and the disc wraps up with the instrumental rampage "On Green Dolphin Street," recorded by the University of Sussex Jazz Trio, from which the original Affinity ultimately arose. A great-sounding album, Live Instrumentals is further distinguished by a sleeve that hangs perfectly alongside the band's own debut album. ~ Dave Thompson
The first nine tracks on this CD were recorded by the four piece at the club, Ronnie Schott's Club in London, in January 1969. An extra 4 tracks are from an FM radio broadcast, and the final track features the US jazz trio from 1965. Angel Air Records. 2003.

John "Wes" Montgomery taught himself to play at the age of nineteen and created a style as influential to jazz guitar as was Charlie Christian's to an earlier generation. Recorded in the early part of his solo career, THE INCREDIBLE JAZZ GUITAR OF WES MONTGOMERY defined standards for hard bop guitar which are as cogent today as they were in 1960.

Live Instrumentals 1969 CD music
$9.59 Saxophonist Sam Rivers certainly assembled a team of hot soloists for this album. However, his compositions are more than just vehicles for improvisation. Rivers's largely angular, even jarring, melodies clearly seek to define a new direction in jazz; they do not fall back on bebop forms or hard-bop funkiness. Each composition contains an abstract "head" and the harmonic underpinning flatly rejects the usual chord progressions found in most standard repertoire. On this 1965 date, Rivers and his band also avoid the blues format.
"Mellifluous Cacophony" (performed twice here) is one such example. On this composition, Rivers begins with an asymmetrical melody that suggests atonality. However, the soloing remains firmly rooted in the jazz lexicon, as pianist Herbie Hancock, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, and Rivers himself rip into these changes with abandon. "Euterpe" is an ethereal ballad replete with a long, free-floating form and stream-of-consciousness ...
