||Powerful Epic of the Christ|
King Of Kings film Samuel Bronston was a superb film maker. His two best were, 'King of Kings' & 'El Cid'. He spared no expense when it came to making movies both entertaining and accurate. His films were the quintessential, powerful epics of the 60's. In fact, I believe Bronston was the Cecil B. De Mille of that decade. No one makes epics of that caliber today and that's so sad. Many films have been made of the story of Jesus, some good and some not so good but 'King of Kings' stands alone and unmatched in it's scope, photography, settings, pace and music. Jeffery Hunter's portrayal of Jesus is staggering. His piercing blue eyes grab a hold of you in such a way, you're left breathless. You feel his kindness, love, compassion, pain & forgiveness unlike any other portrayal of Jesus on film. To parallel the stories of Barrabas and Jesus was a stroke of genius. Most movies just throw Barrabas out there, Pilate says choose, and Jesus is crucified. This film shows why the crowd made their choice the way they did but also emphasizes what a threat Jesus was to the political and religious hierarchy. My only criticism of the film is the mis-casting of Robert Ryan in the role of John the Baptist. Ryan was a very good actor but not in this movie. Set against the powerhouse performances of the rest of the cast, it's easy to see how Ryan's portrayal gets lost. Do yourself a favor. If you've never seen it, don't let it slip by. If you have, it will enhance your collection tenfold.
