Orson Welles narrates the lives of Jesus of Nazareth and Barrabas. Nicholas Ray's lavish and beautifully constructed widescreen epic about the life of Jesus of Nazareth.
"King of Kings" is built upon a series of narrative parallels and contrasts between Jesus and Barrabas. The film portrays the thief as a rebel leader of the Jewish resistance; unlike Jesus, who preaches a message of peace, Barrabas advocates violence as a means to an end. By building his drama around this religious and philosophical conflict, Ray establishes a tension that defamiliarizes this well-known story.
Highlights include the Sermon on the Mount and the scene in which Salome asks King Herod for the head of John the Baptist. A splendid, deeply moving screen biography of Christ. Especially memorable is the portion of the film depicting the "Sermon on the Mount."
Originally a 70mm production, shot in Super Technirama.
A silent version of the life of Christ, also called "King of Kings," was directed by Cecil B. de Mille in 1927. The cast included H.B. Warner (Christ); Jacqueline Logan (Mary Magdalene); Joseph Schildkraut (Judas); Ernest Torrence (Peter); Victor Varconi (Pontius Pilate); Dorothy Cummings (Mary, mother of Jesus); and Rudolph Schildkraut (Caiaphas). Powerful Epic of the Christ Samuel Bronston was a superb film maker. His two best were, 'King of Kings' & 'El Cid'. He spared no expense when it came to making movies both entertaining and accurate. His films were the quintessential, powerful epics of the 60's. In fact, I believe Bronston was the Cecil B. De Mille of that decade. No one makes epics of that caliber today and that's so sad. Many films have been made of the story of Jesus, some good and some not so good but 'King of Kings' stands alone and unmatched in it's scope, photography, settings, pace and music. Jeffery Hunter's portrayal of Jesus is staggering. His piercing blue eyes grab a hold of you in such a way, you're left breathless. You feel his kindness, love, compassion, pain & forgiveness unlike any other portrayal of Jesus on film. To parallel the stories of Barrabas and Jesus was a stroke of genius. Most movies just throw Barrabas out there, Pilate says choose, and Jesus is crucified. This film shows why the crowd made their choice the way they did but also emphasizes what a threat Jesus was to the political and religious hierarchy. My only criticism of the film is the mis-casting of Robert Ryan in the role of John the Baptist. Ryan was a very good actor but not in this movie. Set against the powerhouse performances of the rest of the cast, it's easy to see how Ryan's portrayal gets lost. Do yourself a favor. If you've never seen it, don't let it slip by. If you have, it will enhance your collection tenfold. Submitted by Johnny D. (Prospect, Ct, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

King Of Kings review
$15.15 Shot in Salzburg against the majestic Bavarian Alps, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is considered one of the greatest screen musicals ever made. Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (Robert Wise), the film, based on a real family and their true events, tells the story of a young postulate, Maria (Julie Andrews), who, after proving too high-spirited for the Mother Abess and other nuns, is sent off to work as a governess to seven unruly children. The Von Trapp family is run, in military style, by the seemingly cold-hearted Captain Von Trapp (Christopher Plummer), a lonely widowed naval officer. Seeing how badly he and his children need companionship, he proposes to the Baroness Schraeder (Eleanor Parker), a calculating, mutual friend of beloved family friend Max Detweiler (Richard Haydn). It is the baroness who soon realizes that it's Maria--with her warmth and love for the children--the captain really loves. It is nearly bliss for the newly formed family who loves to sing together--except for the cloud looming over their beloved Austrian horizon: ...

$7.89 STAND AND DELIVER: In this true story, a class not expected to exceed beyond basic arithmetic make academic history, thanks to an inspirational teacher, by achieving record high scores in the state's Advanced Placement Calculus Exam.
LEAN ON ME: Based on actual events, director John G. Avildsen's LEAN ON ME tells the story of Joe Clark (Morgan Freeman), a tough and radical disciplinarian hired to save the worst school in Paterson, New Jersey. The once exemplary Eastside High School is now failing miserably. Graffiti lines the halls, gangs and drugs rule, and teachers and students live in perpetual fear. In one school year, Clark is challenged to turn the snake pit of a school into a halfway civilized place of learning, populated by decent students. To make sure his students pass a basic proficiency exam, Clark resorts to what some believe to be questionable methods--including wandering the halls threateningly with a baseball bat--to restore order to his school. Clark's extreme tactics also include firing teachers for talking back, forcing students to sing the school song on demand, and locking out students known to be drug dealers. Freeman delivers an astonishing performance as the tough-as-nails principal who became a national hero and symbol for tough-love education.
