I have noticed, as I re-watch this season of Angel, that the the Joss Whedon style of show functions best when there is a wide variety of characters that fit into various roles around Angel, the vampire with a soul. Tall, dark, brooding, and quietly charismatic, he does have the ability to carry this season, but only if there is sufficient characters that are a little more out there. Cordelia, Doyle, and early Wesley perform this function well. In fact, the wide variety of personalities allowed Whedon (and the other writers) to draw all the characters into very unfamiliar arenas. This allowed each character to grow; not to mention it made for some of the funniest and most touching moments of Angel. The seasons have been getting progressively worse and it is due to the lack of a comedic element, and a wider variety of characters. Season 1 is the season that all the seasons since are trying to match. It was elegant in its simplicity.

ANGEL is AWESOME!!! the NEW HERO..
ANGEL : Season ONE DVD is GREAT!! I HAVE ONLY SEEN THE FIRST 9 EPISODES.. and they are AMAZING..GREAT STORIES, SOUND, ACTION and SUSPENSE..ANGEL can KICK BUTT and CORDY is just so FUNNY.
CAN'T WAIT for SEASON 2...in SEP 2003.
I also LOVE that BUFFY,SPIKE, OZ, and FAITH make SPECIAL APPEARANCES....

Angel is much darker and more gothic in approach than Buffy, taking on an almost tragic feeling, yet is punctuated with moments of comedy that lighten the mood, and make it pure enjoyment to watch. What series TV is all about. David Boreanaz and Charisma Carpenter work so well together it reminds of Tracy and Hepburn. It doesn't get much better.

This is a run off of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But this one of the best Vampire shows Ive seen. This has a real story line & good effects. This is the 1st of the 5 seasons.
