Green on Red's tinge of psychedelia was provided by Chris Cacavas' organ. But already, the band had traded in most psychedelic references for an Americana influence, along the lines of John Fogerty spiked with Roky Erickson. Completists might find they need Gravity Talks, but better work comes on the band's next record, Gas Food Lodging. ~ Denise Sullivan

Gravity Talks
$8.55 This Davis, California quartet's full-length debut stands alongside such classics as R.E.M.'s CHRONIC TOWN and the Replacements' HOOTENANNY in proving there was more to early '80s music than MTV-ready synthpop. Regularly compared to the first Velvet Underground album on its release, the only points of similarity between the two are in guitarist Karl Precoda's liberal use of feedback, and bassist Kendra Smith's deadpan Nico-like vocal on the coolly dismissive "Too Little Too Late."
Lou Reed has never sounded anywhere near as crazed as Steve Wynn does on the manic title track, and the sneering opener "Tell Me When It's Over" owes more to Dylan's "Positively Fourth Street" than it does to "Heroin." This is one of the classic American pop albums of the '80s.
On the one hand, where the Dream Syndicate came from was so obvious that it almost hurt. The Velvet Underground was a clear ...
| | Shirley Horn I Remember Miles CD (1998)
Gravity Talks
$12.39 I REMEMBER MILES won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.
This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Their friendship and admiration for each other's music lasted through the years, and Shirley Horn's 1991 recording YOU WON'T FORGET ME, was one of the last recordings Miles Davis made.
Horn selected mostly ballads from Davis' Columbia ...
| | Neil Young American Stars 'N' Bars CD (1977) Remastered
Gravity Talks
$6.15 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Released right after the career albums TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT and ZUMA and right before the big-selling COMES A TIME and RUST NEVER SLEEPS, this country-rocky 1977 album is often forgotten. But it introduced the sensational "Like A Hurricane," which has remained a staple of Young's concerts, and such quirky favorites as "Homegrown," an ode to marijuana, and "Old Country Waltz," which is exactly ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Gravity Talks
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Gravity Talks
$12.05 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, ...

$10.15 This Artist wherever and whenever possible does things upside down to most people. Not only is this unusual but this is a way in which some semblance of what originality there is, is retained where this music which may sound similar to others but has something different about it. Of course there are approaches to this need of originality where some people dress "far out" etc..produce different sounds etc.. a long list. What kind of Artist would not have a long cv about their past no.1 hit parade involvement etc,[A mad one?] but each day is a new one and is kept so without the old yesterdays for me.[no living in a ...
