A master of progressive death metal or the "Gothenberg sound" practiced by many a Swedish band, In Flames delivers one of its best efforts with 1997's Whoracle. One extremely heavy number after another flows continuously from this record's track list, including standouts like the mind-bending "Gyroscope" and "Morphing Into Primal," just two of the original and extremely well-executed songs offered on this release. Indeed, some tracks are much better than others on Whoracle. Softer numbers like "Jester Script Transfigured," with its half-acoustic Metallica ballad vibe, could probably have been left off this otherwise powerful recording. There are also some rather unnecessary vocal histrionics, most notably on "Worlds Within the Margin," but this kind of overcooked "singing" really comes with the death metal territory. None of these sour notes manages to damage Whoracle, and the record has ultimately become accepted in the highly factional underground metal community as an important release not only for In Flames, but for the entire melodic death metal movement. ~ Vincent Jeffries

Although Unmasked was certified gold shortly after its release in the U.S., it quickly fell off the charts. Deciding factors included the band's failure to mount a stateside tour, the fact that the majority of the compositions on Unmasked were easily forgettable, and longtime fans' weariness with Kiss' attempts to branch out into other musical styles. Vini Poncia was on board as producer again, and again he replaces the raw, heavy rock of earlier Kiss releases with pop gloss. Several tracks are indeed strong, and would have benefited greatly by a more direct sound, such as "Is That You?," "Talk to Me," "Two Sides of the Coin," "Naked City," and the single, "Shandi." But there's more filler on Unmasked than the average Kiss release -- "What Makes the World Go 'Round," "Tomorrow," and "She's So European" are tedious and predictable, both compositionally and sonically. Anybody unfamiliar with this album is best warned that it isn’t UFO. In fact, it isn’t even Waysted. This is Pete Way at his most honest, his most basic. This is rock n’ roll at it’s most unapologetic. If you like you’re rock hard, fast and ballsy, then sign up here, young man. If, however, it all sounds a bit.. well, dangerous then maybe this is best avoided. Tales of drug addiction and life’s seedier side don’t make for particularly pleasant listening.

Chronicling a dark dalliance with drugs, Amphetamine, the debut solo album by UFO/Waysted bassist Pete Way, was bound to surprise fans of his previous work when it originally surfaced in 2001. Recorded with the help of guitarist Walt James and drummer Scott Phillips, the disc marked Way's introduction as a vocalist, revealing his personal demons amid a dark, raw, noisy backdrop that comes closer to the punk/metal efforts of Motörhead and the heroin-plagued '90s grunge movement as evidenced by tracks like "That's Tuff" and "American Kid (What a Shame)." As a vocalist, Way is only passable, and the mere eight studio cuts offered make Amphetamine seem a little light on material -- a notion that isn't helped much by the fact that this 2004 reissue houses three bonus tracks, all of which are home demos of three albums' original cuts. ~ John D. As one of the great trance singers and stylists in the genre, Winston Rodney (aka Burning Spear) has always come up with records that are distinctive and socially conscious. This 1997 12-track effort for the Heartbeat imprint is no exception, kicking off with "The Future (Clean It Up)," and a plea for worldwide understanding of mankind's current state of affairs. A prayer to Jah to eradicate prejudice comes with the title track, a sentiment that also surfaces in "Glory Be to Jah." An odd, but nonetheless compelling tribute to Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead comes with the celebratory "Play Jerry." The rest of the album's themes vacillate between social consciousness-raising ("Come In Peace," "Don't Sell Out," "African Jamaican," "My Island," "Commercial Development") and the peace that comes when the music is right ("Loving You," "Reggae Physician," and the set closer, "Music").
