The first Pulp album, 1983's IT is slightly different from their later material. While many of lead crooner Jarvis Cocker's lyrical concerns are present--seedy sexual encounters, class distinctions, and the like--there are glimpses of hope and joy among the sordid details. This is most notable in "Love Love," a downright cheerful English music-hall number where Cocker proclaims, "I love love" against a sprightly backing track replete with trumpets.
Die-hard fans need not fear that this is a kinder, gentler version of Pulp, though. "Joking Aside" features Cocker intoning, "Yes, I'd like to turn you over, see what's on your other side, see if the problem's in my mind" in a manner reminiscent of Depeche Mode's Martin Gore at the latter's sleaziest. While the sound is not quite as musically dense and orchestral as it is on latter albums, a sense of claustrophobia dominates the proceedings in spite of the sparse instrumentation and airy production. "Blue Girls" is positively maudlin, with an understated flute and a female backing choir. Trivia buffs should note that Simon Hinkler, who left after this record to join The Mission (UK), is among the members of this early version of Pulp.
Reissue of their 1983 debut. It is a gentle, mainly acoustic album that gives very few signs to the musical directions Pulp would later pursue. Lacking any hint of synthesizers or dance music, the album occasionally touches on the majestic, theatrical ballads of Scott Walker, as well as the stark, folky song poems of Leonard Cohen. Slipcase. Fire Records. 2002.

$6.55 Pulp's breakthrough album arrived after an unbelievably long haul, and then Jarvis Cocker was suddenly sharing front pages of music magazines with Liam and Damon. Here, the songs explored now-familiar Pulp territory, social class, seedy sexual encounters, voyeurism ('Babies'), bad sex ('you bought a toy that can reach the places he never goes'), good sex, and lots more sex, all blessed with Cocker's humorous, touching and, conversely, often innocent lyrical observations. Capable of writing almost unbearably tender love songs and laments for wasted lives ('your hair is a mess and your eyes are just holes in your face'), Cocker's honesty and insight were distilled to perfection in the wonderful 'Do You Remember The First Time'.
The track "Razzmatazz" is not listed on the album artwork.

| | Pulp This Is Hardcore CD (1998)
It CD music
$12.59 "I'm not Jesus, though I've got the same initials," croons Jarvis Cocker in Pulp's folllowup to 1996's gleefully hateful DIFFERENT CLASS. As this line illustrates, THIS IS HARDCORE takes Pulp further over the top in every sense--shamelessly dramatic structures telegraph every crescendo, and tense verse arrangements give way to sweeping sing-along choruses. Cocker's venomous, confessional lyrics are best evidenced in his trademark spoken sections--murmured tales of obsession punctuate the band's call to arms for the pasty, skinny dispossessed youth of the world.
THIS IS HARDCORE boasts a fantastic palette of sonic textures, from the thick T. Rex-influenced grooves to spacey chimes, E-bows, and storms of feedback. Analog synths buzz and sputter, held aloft by rich string arrangements. As the title implies, sexual themes abound, notably on the cool rush of "Party Hard" and the slow throb of the title track. "Help The Aged" features elegant instrumentation and a lyric which manages to be poetic where lesser misanthropes would yield to the temptation to be comedic. The anthemic closer "The Day After The Revolution" carries on the proud Pulp tradition of nihilism, assuring us that, thankfully, that huge chip on Cocker's finely coutured shoulder isn't going anywhere.
Recorded at The Townhouse, Olympic Studios, CTS Studios, London, England.
Personnel: Chris Thomas , Anne Dudley (piano); Mark Haley, Magnus Fiennes, Matthew Vaughan, Olle Romo (programming); Mandy Bell, Jackie Rawe, Carol Kenyon (background vocals).

| | Pulpintro -- The Gift Recordings CD (1993)
It music CDs
$15.89 All of the singles Pulp recorded for Gift Records, including both the A- and B-sides, are collected on Pulpintro -- The Gift Recordings. From the opening track, "Space," it's clear that Pulp's confidence and talents have grown considerably, even from the relatively accomplished Separations. Now, the band has created a signature sound that relies heavily on cheap, synthesized sounds as well as tight pop melodies and a theatrical attack that approximates the art rock of Roxy Music and David Bowie. However, Pulp is too concerned with earthly pleasures to really recall Roxy or Bowie. Furthermore, the band's knack for creating terrific pop singles prevents them from being too pretentious, as the singles "O.U.," "Razzamatazz," and, particularly, "Babies" illustrate. And even though it's just a collection of singles, Pulpintro holds together as well as Separations, if not better. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Nine track collection featuring the three singlesreleased by Pulp on the Gift label, 1992-1993, as a way tointroduce these songs to fans who missed out the first timearound. | | Pulp Freaks CD (1986)
It songs
$13.69 The second Pulp album, 1986's FREAKS sees several changes from the band's debut of three years prior. The overall mood is much more sinister and aggressive (the album's subtitle is "Ten Songs about Power, Claustrophobia, Suffocation, and Holding Hands."), alternately recalling such early Smiths tracks as "Suffer Little Children" and some of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' "The Carny."
FREAKS also finds main lyricist Jarvis Cocker handing over the vocal reins to guitarist Russell Senior on two particularly creepy songs. The first, "Fairground," opens the album with a swirling tale of a freak show, while the second, "Anorexic Beauty," is an ode to a distressingly thin woman ("Brittle hands and thin cigarettes, so hard to tell apart"). Elsewhere, "Being Followed Home" presents a story of stalking set against a carnival-esque musical backing. The music builds in intensity, playing over and over as the narrator's fear upon hearing the footsteps of a stranger increases. FREAKS is an altogether disquieting album that moved Pulp into the realms of the Goth movement.
2002 reissue of 1986 album subtitled Ten Stories About Power, Claustrophobia, Suffocation & Holding Hands. Simply awesome, ranging from Scott Walker balladeering to post-punk, avant-garde aggressiveness. Slipcase.

It album
$6.95 In Gore Verbinski's remake of Hideo Nakata's chilling horror film, a group of teenagers all die suddenly and inexplicably exactly one week after watching a mysterious videotape at a remote cabin in the Pacific Northwest. Journalist Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts), a relative of one of the victims, begins an investigation that leads to a mountain resort where she discovers the tape, which contains footage of random and surreal images. After viewing the tape, Rachel receives a phone call stating that she, too, has seven days left to live. As the clock ticks away, Rachel enlists the help of her former boyfriend, Noah (Martin Henderson), who is the father of her startlingly serious young son, Aidan (David Dorfman). Assisted by the intuitive illustrations of Aidan and the initially reluctant research of Noah, Rachel attempts to discover the significance of the cryptic tape before her time is up.
The original RING, based on a novel by Kôji Suzuki, was a cult phenomenon in Japan, spawning a sequel, a prequel, and other spin-offs. Although Verbinski's adaptation shares much in common with its Japanese counterpart, the director distinctly alters numerous plot elements and, in grandiose Hollywood style, employs a much larger budget. The beautiful cinematography is one of the more telling enhancements, along with added screen time for other characters, including the morose Richard Morgan (Brian Cox). However, the key to this RING is Watts, who shines through the creepy atmosphere in a role that follows her success in MULHOLLAND DRIVE. This would appear to be no coincidence, since the film comes across like a David Lynch version of an X-FILES episode that presents shockingly scary moments and makes the most out of the unknown. A clear cut above most contemporary horror films, THE RING offers genuine chills and will make viewers think twice before watching any unmarked videotapes.

| | Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream CD (1993)
It music CDs
$11.39 This edition of SIAMESE DREAM contains the original 20-page booklet.
When SIAMESE DREAM was initially released in the summer of 1993 it was hailed as alternative rock's first great post-NEVERMIND hope. And while it has gone on to become an overwhelming commercial success, it has also helped further re-draw the artistic borders of "alternative" music.
By combining neo-psychedelic AOR guitars (band-members proudly claim Boston as an influence) with Pumpkin auteur Billy Corgan's "outsider" lyrical stance, SIAMESE DREAM creates a rebel image; but one with a wandering eye towards mainstream acceptance as well. Consequently, Smashing Pumpkins are equally successful relating to young lollapaloozers and to classic rock radio.
The album's immediate attraction is plain to see. Corgan and co-producer Butch Vig have sculpted a sonic wall of guitars--in some cases, using up to 32 separate guitar tracks on a single song--that is electrifying in its sheer scope and power. Along with Jimmy Chamberlain's powerhouse drumming, guitarists Corgan and James Iha's thick sound endows SIAMESE DREAM with a fresh feel that holds up even on repeated listens--and how many other "top ten" albums can you say that about?

| | 60'S Rock: Mony Mony CD (1997)
It songs
$5.95 Rhino Flashback's budget-priced '60s compilation '60s Rock: Mony Mony collects ten spirited cuts from the decade, including the iconic ("I Got You Babe" by Sonny & Cher) and the oddball (the Fifth Estate's "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead"). For what it's worth, any mix that can boast the Beau Brummels' infectious "Just a Little," the Vogues' classic "Five O'Clock World," and two Tommy James & the Shondells tunes is already worth a couple of bucks, but anything over that would be thievery. ~ James Christopher Monger
