Sailing around classifications of jazz, Smooth-Jazz, Progressive and Avant-garde, Come to Me blends the best of Latin, flamenco influences, funk and a touch of trip-hop with jazz into a single cohesive style. Under the Stewardship of Benny Rietveld, whose adept arrangements enhance the sublimely distinctive melodies. Each track is as original as the next, and, perhaps resisting the temptation to follow traditional Jazz classification, Come To Me is instantly identifiable as a James Band production. The seed of a possible collaboration between Benny Rietveld and Gregory James germinated after one of several performances together over the years, and finally the two joined their efforts at Fantasy Studios this year.Bassist Benny Rietveld toured with Sheila E in 1984, opening for Prince's Purple Rain tour. He joined Miles Davis in 1988 to tour and record for two years before joining Santana.Guitarist Gregory James has performed with a diverse range of artists from Ray Charles to Van Morrison, Jean Luc Ponty and Chico Mamilton among others. Today, James continues to write and assemble musical talent to produce fresh, improvised music.Come To Me brings to fruition Benny's production and arrangement for The Gregory James Band and Rogue productions.Come To Me is seductive and, listening to track five, one finds Destani Wolfs' sultry smooth voice perform the song nurtured to fame by Bjork.

| | Mark O'Connor Live In New York CD (2005)
Come To Me CD music
$13.39 Violinist Mark O'Connor's third recording with his Hot Swing Trio is more than just a tribute to the great Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt, as it also showcases the leader's compositions. Joined by ex-Grappelli bassist Jon Burr and guitarist Frank Vignola (who is influenced by Reinhardt though his style range extends much farther), the trio shows the influence of the Quintet of the Hot Club of France while incorporating their individual styles into old favorites like "Fascinating Rhythm," and "Ain't Misbehavin," though the chugging, bluesy setting of "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" is hard to beat. Among O'Connor's many originals, the demanding "Gypsy Fantastic" (which one can easily imagine Grappelli and Reinhardt playing), "Fiddler Going Home" (a moving tribute to Claude "Fiddler" Williams) and the deliciously loopy "Funky Swing" are all highlights. But all is eclipsed by the virtuoso display of musicianship in O'Connor's ridiculously up-tempo arrangement of the old chestnut "Tiger Rag." Highly recommended! ~ Ken Dryden
If hard bop and Dixieland can have their neo-classicists and nostalgia lovers, there is no reason why Gypsy swing shouldn't have them as well -- and in fact, Europe is full of Gypsy swing artists who faithfully emulate Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli's classic recordings of the 1930s and 1940s. But not all Gypsy swing artists are stuck in the past, and not all Gypsy swing artists are based in Europe. Mark O'Connor, in fact, is a Seattle-born violinist whose Hot Swing Trio often combine a passion for Reinhardt and Grappelli's legacy with a big dose of Americana. Recorded at Manhattan's Merkin Hall in 2004, Live in New York is fairly unpredictable and ranges from performances that are lovingly Paris-like to performances that are much more mindful ...
