Sublime an incredible album. A bit too jazzy at times, but otherwise excellent in every way- the inclusion of don carlos is inspired. Very rootsy, yet also quite fast tempo. Extremely arousing stuff- i'd advise everyone to buy it Submitted by Fabian (Gloucestershire, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Culture International Herb CD (1979) Import
Hebron Gate CD music
$10.19 African-American R&B has affected different reggae artists in different ways. While Toots and the Maytals' gritty ska/reggae is comparable to the raw, tough southern soul that Wilson Picket, Sam & Dave and Otis Redding were known for, Culture's sweet, mellifluous style of reggae is closer to the northern soul and sweet soul that came out of Chicago, Philadelphia and Detroit in the '60s and '70s. On International Herb, ones hears a lot of northern ...
| | Groundation Young Tree CD (2002)
Hebron Gate music CDs
$13.79 The grassroots consensus on this American reggae band is mixed. On the one hand, there is simply no denying its outrageous way with a roots reggae groove; other than the justly celebrated John Brown's Body, there may not be another white reggae band that plays this music so idiomatically and powerfully. On the other hand, there's singer Harrison Stafford. Unfortunately, he sounds like the demon spawn of Apple Gabriel and Bob Marley, delivering his lyrics with a whiny intensity that he ...
| | Groundation We Free Again CD (2004)
Hebron Gate songs
$13.79 California's internationally renowned reggae group Groundation emerges from the depths of the studio with their 4th album entitled "We Free Again." The music is fresh and new, proving once again that they are committed to the task of ground-breaking orig
Two things will strike you immediately about this album. First, Groundation is perhaps the finest roots reggae band in California. Its seven members generate slow, smoky, disciplined grooves that rumble and shudder with the inexorable power of an elephant stampede and manage to sound simultaneously sensual and mystical. The second thing that will strike you, for probably not the first time, is the degree to which Apple Gabriel's ...
| | Raga For Peter Walker CD (2006) Digipak
Hebron Gate album
$11.09 Many of the legends of acoustic guitar in the 20th century have already passed on -- John Fahey, Robbie Basho, Ali Farka Toure. Due partially to his spare recording career, Peter Walker's own reputation has not always been as well known as those of said giants, but his own influence has been considerable. A Raga for Peter Walker -- a tribute album that, in a nice touch, not only consists of work composed by its contributors rather than simply offering up covers but also features some original work by its subject in question -- helps to demonstrate this while he is still here to receive acknowledgement of it. Walker's four originals, all new tracks, bookend the collection, each brief but demonstrating that Walker's vigor and skill remain undimmed, from the opening "Day at the Fair," which lives up to its title with ...

| | Mighty Diamonds Reggae Street CD (1987)
Hebron Gate music CDs
$14.15 The Mighty Diamonds remain one of the most influential of the many harmony trios that appeared on the reggae scene in the late '60s and early '70s. Although their lyrics have generally focused on sociopolitical and religious themes, their vocal sound is smooth and soft, unlike the raw, open harmonies favored by some of their similarly inclined contemporaries. Lead singer Donald "Tabby" Shaw has an especially silken voice, one which sometimes sounds curiously out of place delivering dread messages like those contained in "Illiteracy" ...
| | Take Warning: The Songs Of Operation Ivy CD (1997)
Hebron Gate songs
$8.29 A decade after the inception of seminal ska-revival, an impressively diverse roster of bands endeavors to doff their alternative/punk/speed-reggae hats to Berkeley's Operation Ivy. Whiffs of the musically mod from rap to neo-swing are present, from Reel Big Fish's yelling-in-the-street-sound on "Unity" to "Sound System," by the hip militia, Cherry Poppin' Daddies. The indecipherable lyrics and long-held notes on My Superhero's "Big City" don't duplicate the frenzied vocals on the original version, although Pocket Lent's pristine "Bankshot" is a suitably energetic, simplistic sample of what made Ivy a sensation. We assume bands like Green Day and Dance Hall Crashers literally would not exist without the capabilities of Ivy's self-proclaimed allegiance to ...
