There's no denying that Yanni is a global phenomenon virtually unmatched in the annals of popular music. In addition to selling gazillions of albums and single-handedly bringing new age music to a mass audience, his flair for showmanship led him to become the first Western musician to play concerts at both the Taj Mahal and China's Forbidden City. Yanni's taste for the grandiose is reflected in his music as well, which mixes the most dramatic and sweeping elements of progressive rock, world music, neo-classical, and experimental electronic music into a easily palatable stew that can be by turns soothing or awe-inspiring.
THE ULTIMATE YANNI is pretty much what the title implies--the definitive collection of recordings from Yanni's "classic" 1986-1994 Private Music era. The two-disc set covers all the keyboardist/media icon's best-known pieces, from the ubiquitous romantic piano ballad "One Man's Dream" (from 1993's IN MY TIME) to the thundering orchestral onslaught that is "Santorini" (from the multi-platinum LIVE AT THE ACROPOLIS). THE ULTIMATE YANNI is the best way to experience the full range of Yanni's capabilities without buying each of his individual albums.
Includes liner notes by Simon Czukay.
Producers include: Yanni, Leonard Hill, Malcolm McLaren, Peter Baumann, Jerry Steckling.

A diverse range This CD has it all. Yanni's faster, somewhat jazzy pieces (I'm not a jazz fan, but these are not that jazzy)to his more slow, soft, soothing melodies. Also, there are a few selections from his Live At The Acropolis performance. If you're looking for a diverse range of Yanni's music, then you will no doubt enjoy this. Ultimate Yanni CD music
$20.25 All Music Guide classifies as a compilation any album that consists one-half or more of previously released recordings; by that score, The Journey, Gypsy Soul's fifth album, is almost -- but not quite -- a compilation. Of its 11 tracks, five have appeared on previous Gypsy Soul CDs (although they have been remastered here): "Won't Be Wrong" and "Talk to Me" were on Sanctuary (1998), and "Who," "Take Me Away," and "True Love (Scarborough Fair)" were on Superstition Highway (2000). A sixth song, "Test of Time," was the title tune on the group's 1995 debut album, but the version heard here is a stripped-down, acoustic re-recording. All of these are tracks that would be strong contenders if one actually were assembling a Gypsy Soul best-of, and several of the newly recorded songs also might make that list; at very least, they are representative. "Promises and Lies," the leadoff track, finds singer/lyricist Cilette Swann dressing down a romantic partner, while in the second song, "One More Day," she waxes philosophical about her own choices in life and those of others. These issues of intimacy and spirituality are typical of her lyrical concerns, which she expresses simply and directly. She sings the words in a compelling voice that may seem mannered occasionally, but is full of feeling. Roman Morykit, her partner in the duo, provides delicately played yet powerful musical support with his array of guitars, fretless bass, and percussion tracks, making for effective folk-rock arrangements with a new age slant. Since its inception, Gypsy Soul have been a group for people who worry that practically nobody other than artists over 50 is making thoughtful, melodic pop/rock music anymore. There are such artists, of course, but often, like Gypsy Soul, they're self-releasing their albums and having to promote them largely by themselves. The Journey marks an alliance between Gypsy Soul's Off the Beaten Track Records and the label SoundWorld, which may help explain why it's as much a retrospective as a new album. That very circumstance makes it a good starter CD for those looking for one disc to ...

| | Accra Trane Station + 2 Topographies Of The Dark CD (2008)
Ultimate Yanni CD music
$15.19 TOPOGRAPHIES OF THE DARK Sculptural paintings by Virginia Ryan, created in Accra, Ghana Sound improvisations by the Accra Trane Station Trio of Nii Noi Nortey, Nii Otoo Annan, and Steven Feld, plus Alex Coke and Jefferson Voorhees Recorded in Santa Fe, New Mexico on the occasion of Accra Trane Station’s first visit from Ghana to the U.S., Topographies of the Dark is a musical exploration in dialogue with sculptural paintings made in Accra by visual artist Virginia Ryan. Her textured assemblages in overlaying densities of black are featured in the accompanying booklet. Ryan’s Topographies of the Dark paintings are created from recycled flip-flops that washed up on Accra’s beaches. Like the water rolling in and out along the Black Atlantic coast, these once-worn shoes embody histories of movement and passage, crossings close and far. The Topographies of the Dark CD similarly tells tales of musical crossings that connect Africa, Europe, and America in the diasporic grooves of jazz improvisation. Accra Trane Station is Nii Noi Nortey and Nii Otoo Annan. Nortey is inventor of the afrifones, African winds with saxophone mouthpieces, and Annan plays the APK, or African percussion kit, a battery of African bells and drums together with jazz cymbals. Since 2005 Nortey and Annan have been working with musician and anthropologist Steven Feld, who joins the group on ashiwa, the West African rhythm box bass. As a trio they have recorded two previous Voxlox Cds, the 2006 Meditations for John Coltrane, a tribute to the 40th anniversary of Coltrane’s Meditations, and 2007 Another Blue Train, marking the 50th anniversary of Ghana’s independence and Coltrane’s Blue Train. When Accra Trane Station came to New Mexico in August 2007, Feld proposed a recording collaboration with two of his oldest musical associates, Alex Coke and Jefferson Voorhees.
