During 1979-1981, the great stride pianist Ralph Sutton recorded an extensive series of albums for the tiny Chaz label. Included in the releases were a quartet set with cornetist Ruby Braff, bassist Jack Lesberg, and drummer Gus Johnson, and a duet project with Braff. All of the Sutton dates were elusive and out of print for years, until Chiaroscuro began reissuing some of these valuable sets. This CD has all 11 of the selections from the quartet album and eight out of the 12 duets; hopefully the remaining four duos will be reissued in the future. Braff and Sutton both had the knack of hinting at earlier greats while still sounding very much like themselves. In fact, those who are familiar with the cornetist will have no trouble identifying him within a few notes. Among the 19 songs that are happily swung are such gems as "Shoe Shine Boy," "Sweethearts on Parade," "You Can Depend on Me," "Sunday," "I Would Do Anything for You," and "Dinah." While never wandering too far from the melodies, the two lead voices consistently come up with plenty of fresh ideas and always show their enthusiasm and affection for the vintage music. Easily recommended to fans of small-group swing and trad. ~ Scott Yanow

R&R album
$15.09 Digitally remastered by Jon Bates (Downtown Sound & Mix Masters).
In 1977 -- the year following Bobby Hackett's death at the age of 61 -- producer Hank O'Neal's Chiaroscuro label released a third album of material from Hackett's triumphant 1970 engagement at the Roosevelt Grill in New York. Titled Bobby Hackett Featuring Vic Dickenson at the Roosevelt Grill, the LP was reissued in 1999 as the CD Live at the Roosevelt Grill, Vol. 3. This CD contains everything that was on the original LP, along with four previously unreleased bonus tracks: "Ain't Misbehavin'," "Muskrat Ramble," "Someday Sweetheart," and "I Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None o' This Jelly Roll." O'Neal had taped Hackett's Roosevelt performances extensively, ...
| | Sidney Bechet Runnin' Wild CD (1998)
R&R CD music
$12.99 This late '40s Blue Note date groups jazz legend Sidney Bechet with cornetist Wild Bill Davison and pianist Art Hodes and injects a fresh dose of vitality into Bechet's hard-driving style of New Orleans jazz. Backed by a strong rhythm section, the three musicians swap leads on classics like "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out," "Basin Street Blues," and "When the Saints Go Marching In." ...
| | Ruby Braff Variety Is The Spice Of Braff CD (2002)
R&R music CDs
$9.69 Trumpeter/cornet player Ruby Braff began performing traditional jazz in the Boston area in the 1940s and over 50 years later shows no signs of slowing down. In 2001 he released the lovely I Hear Music and in 2002 followed it with the eclectic Variety Is the Spice of Braff. While the earlier effort featured a first-rate quintet, the latter is made up of larger groups in multiple settings. The ...

| | Harry "Sweets" Edison Sweets CD (1956) Reissue; Remastered; Digipak
R&R album
$9.55 Neither an innovator nor an iconoclast, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison is simply one of the bluesiest, hardest-swinging, and downright tastiest jazz musicians of the 20th century. A consummate sideman who worked steadily throughout his career (even getting gigs recording soundtracks in the '50s), Edison ...
| | Ruby Braff Controlled Nonchalance At The Regattabar, Vol. 2 CD (2005)
R&R CD music
$13.49 Although cornet player Ruby Braff passed away in 2002, Arbors has continued to honor his legacy by releasing previously unavailable material. As a result, Braff's oeuvre continues to grow along with his reputation as a central figure in revival jazz. Controlled Nonchalance at the Regattabar, Vol. 2, recorded on November 26 and 27, 1993, may be an odd title for an album, but the music is fabulous. Braff is joined by tenor Scott Hamilton, pianist Dave McKenna, guitarist Gray Sargent, bassist ...
| | Santi Debriano Circle Chant CD (1999)
R&R music CDs
$14.29 Panamanian bassist Debriano utilizes many influences, including his Afro-Latin heritage. There are hard samba and latin-jazz threads easily recognized, but the other worldly violin work of Israeli born Miri Ben-Ari sets this project apart from other salsa, world music or jazz recordings that incorporate rhythms and melodies from distant places. The uplifting opener "Mano Y Mano," in a trio setting with Brazilian pianist Helio Alves is followed by the ultimately tuneful Duke Pearson evergreen "Is That So?" with vocalist ...
