This duo has been working together since the early '90s and has been documented before (on Tom Hamilton's CD Off-Hour Wait State, for example), but never as extensively as in this case. Jump the Circle, Jump the Line was recorded live on December 1st, 2000. Hamilton produces a wide array of synthesized electronic sounds and, to a lesser extent, processes Thomas Buckner's voice. The latter alternates between textural noise-making and deep sustained notes. The album is comprised of a single, continuous improvisation (indexes have been added for convenience, hence the track titles "Segment A," "Segment B," etc.). The singer gracefully leaves control of the stage to Hamilton, whose presence will be heard constantly from the first second to the last. Buckner lets him establish a pace before entering and often retreats to give him a chance to modify the path of the piece. As Buckner argues in the liner notes, this music was not about meeting the other halfway. Each improviser follows his own direction and ideas, with the difference that the singer does not have all of his freewill. Hamilton's processing, although light, occasionally sends him hiking on a different track. The electronic soundscapes can get very space-born, as in "Segment E," and in general sound better, more focused and less gimmicky than on Peter Zummo's Slybersonic Tromosome. Released only a few months after Buckner and Roscoe Mitchell's free improv date 8 O'Clock: Two Improvisations, this CD acts like a companion, completing the picture of the singer's activities at the turn of the century. ~ François Couture

Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has been in some exotic musical environments in the past -- from his various quintets, quartets, his Afro-Cuban outfit Crisol, and his funk band the RH Factor, he's pretty much done it all. And while he's played in various big bands before, he's never led his own until now. Emergence on the Groovin' High imprint features a 19-member big band, playing a set of 11 standards and originals by Hargrove and bandmembers as well as a track written for the leader by none other than pianist Chucho Valdés -- who doesn't appear here. The roots for this project go all the way back to 1995 when Hargrove formed a big band to play the New York Jazz Festival. The group went through many metamorphoses when he played a series of club and festival gigs over the intervening years. The set begins with "Velera," a tune written and arranged by Hargrove. It's a ballad in modal style with extended harmonies and a lovely textural palette. The composer employs restraint to bring forth his gorgeous melody. It's followed by "Ms. Garvey, Ms. Garvey," written and arranged by baritone saxophonist Jason Marshall. It quotes liberally from "Wade in the Water" and "Hit the Road Jack," but is a stomping, raucous blues in its own right with the wide chromatic and harmonic range of the brass section on full display, and contains a smoking solo break by Hargrove. Some of the standards that really shine are an unusually restrained and utterly elegant "My Funny Valentine" and the finger-popping "September in the Rain," the former arranged by bass trombonist Max Siegel and the latter by Hargrove. Frank Lacy's "Requiem" is here, and is the most imaginative tune on the set; arranged by the composer, it walks a solid line between modern post-bop jazz and modern classical composition. During the period covered by this 1998 sampler CD, Tito Puente had a series of very strong Latin jazz bands, much more jazz-oriented than most of his earlier work. Forgotten Streets of St. Petersburg came out in 2005 as a celebration of TriO's 20th anniversary, but the music was actually recorded in late 1998. Tuvan singer Sainkho Namtchylak had collaborated with this horn trio back in the late '80s (their work together and apart is documented on the box set Golden Years of the Soviet New Jazz, Vol. 3). This performance thus marked a reunion of sorts. There is only one recording date given, but the album seems to be pieced together from various performances: acoustics change drastically from one short track to the next, and so do the sound quality and the tape hiss levels. Some pieces, which seem to have been recorded in a church, have terrible sound, despite the obvious quality of the music -- they even begin and end with the distinct sounds of someone manning the tape recorder. Therefore, this album is clearly for the fans. That being said, there is some thrilling music to be heard. With her voice, Sainkho can match any of TriO's many horns. They interact on a deeply moving level, especially when playing dirges like the title track. TriO also get a few jazzier tunes and Sainkho throws in a few solo throat singing pieces that make it definitely worthwhile to overlook the audio shortcomings ("Seven Corners, Wind" ...
