A charming record that is sure to strike an amiable chord among children's audiences and all ages. Sesame Street released "In Harmony" as an effort to bring together an all-star cast of talented musicians known for their commercial appeal during the late '70s. The album opens up with a beautifully spun and delightfully crafted poem/song, "Wynken, Blynken and Nod," words by Eugene Field with melody by Lucy Simon. Sailing off to a sea of dew one starry night are the fisherman three, fishing for the herrin' fish, "nets of silver and gold have we," sing the Doobie Brothers. Catchy and sincerely ethereal, the tune is worth a listen time and time again. Cornelius Bumpus adds extra sugar to the tune with radiant flute and saxophone leads. Singer/songwriting sensation James Taylor puts a charge into the chorus of a "Jelly Man Kelly," a man who makes a feast of anything jelly. Taylor also adds dazzling guitar work to Carly Simon's pleasant vocals in "Be With Me." Much marketing ado will no doubt be made over the wonderful dream-come-true nature of the legendary conguero's pairing with jazz piano great Chick Corea, in a setting which brings the latter back to his roots playing with Mongo Santamaria in the '60s. And the two Corea-touched tracks are definite highlights. He wrote the jumpy, heavy-chorded jam title track, which finds him doing call and response with feisty horns as Sanchez pitter patters fancifully in the background; the piano improvisations between these interactions are characteristically mind-boggling, as Corea switches off from bebop to hardcore Latin ivory sweeps. Kevin Misajon's debut album, "PICTURE", has something for everybody, and it's worth listening to. Upon first listen, the likes of Jack Johnson and Ben Harper may come to mind, but just as quickly, Van Morrison and Bob Dylan came to mine. With a wide range of influences and versatility, this album displays a talent for songwriting as well as musicianship. You know those CDs that you can't listen to all that much, because the songs all sound the same? This is not one of those CDs. Misajon is not one of those artists. It seems more like a mixed CD of your favorites than one artist's project.Think of the laid-back surf vibe, but then throw in an urban-motivated experience with socially-conscious principles. It's refreshing to hear feel-good songs with some substance. While this album sounds like it could be a pop record with its catchy hooks, Misajon takes away the sugar-coating and makes the listener think. Instead of a prophetic, politically-charged bandwagon, he keeps it simple, clever, and fun. Indeed it seems to be a sign of the times. "Take what we have now and either preserve it or make it better, because nothing lasts forever."
