This collection of traditional Hungarian gypsy classics is performed by Andras Farkas, a veteran of concert circuits and hotel circuits alike. The songs range from the more relaxed love songs to the fiery dances, always with Farkas' violin leading the ensemble. The ensemble can switch relatively well from a controlled movement together to a stretch of collective improvisation at a moment's notice, with punctuations provided by the cimbalom from time to time to pull the group back together. Some of the more interesting features of this album are perhaps those items that aren't exactly part of the Hungarian group repertoire: the solos. The cellist performs a nice rendition of a street tango early in the album, and the cimbalom player provides an outstanding rendition of a pair of czardas, a slow and a fast one. When a good cimbalom player goes into a fast passage, it makes for a good show of virtuosity, and this one is no exception. Given the wealth of Hungarian (and Romanian, among others) gypsy music available on the market, this album is rather overshadowed by the larger groups on larger labels (Muzikas, Taraf de Haidouks). At the mid-priced level though, it's not a bad buy for a quick listen of the same kind of material, although performed by a rather lesser-known band. ~ Adam Greenberg Hungarian Gypsy Music Music Hungarian Gypsy Music Review

| | Vieux Farka Toure Fondo CD (2009)
Hungarian Gypsy Music songs
$13.59 With his sophomore release, Vieux Farka Touré steps out of the shadow of his late, illustrious father. He's not only developed into a convincing songwriter and singer (but one who happily concedes the microphone to other talents, like Afel Bocoum, who sings on three tracks here), but a stunning guitarist, as well. You can hear traces of his father in his work, but the style is very much his own, flowing and free, rippling almost like a kora, but also throwing in lovely, darting runs, as on "Aï Haïra," where the fills -- not to mention the solo -- are delicious, powered along by talking drum. It's all ineffably West African, and he's not afraid to play, as most of the tracks top the four-minute mark, leaving lots of room for him to display his ...

Hungarian Gypsy Music CD music
$6.79 The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel ...

The cool-toned altoist Hal McKusick was a flexible, if not all that distinctive soloist. He is heard in four settings on this British LP, ranging from a pianoless quartet to a quintet and an octet. Among the supporting cast ...
