This characteristically spectacular Ross Hunter musical production, a parody of the films of the 1920s, stars Julie Andrews as the eager young Millie Dillmount. She arrives in New York City in the 1920s intent on a job as a secretary with a rich, handsome, eligible boss. Deciding to adopt the appearance of a flapper, she has her hair bobbed. At a women's hotel run by Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie), who also runs a white slavery ring, she meets the beautiful, naive Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore). Millie does get a job with a handsome boss, Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), but he has eyes only for Miss Dorothy, and Millie is forced to make do with Jimmy Smith (James Fox), a paper-clip salesman. THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE follows the misadventures of happy-go-lucky Millie, who moves to New York City to become a thoroughly modern flapper and win the heart of a millionaire. But Millie encounters a few obstacles on the road to happiness, including a romantically inclined stockboy, a wealthy best friend with eyes for Millie's handsome boss, and a ring of white slavers who operate out of her boarding house. After they've returned to the hotel from attending a party at the Long Island estate of wealthy Muzzy van Hossmere (Carol Channing), Millie finds that Miss Dorothy has disappeared. When she and Jimmy detect the scent of opium in Mrs. Meers's room, they realize she has a sideline. The valiant Jimmy must go in drag to uncover the whereabouts of the white slavers' hideout. The cast and crew perform admirably in this light farce that is almost too sweet for its own good. Theatrical release: March 21, 1967.
Ross Hunter eventually took control of the film away from George Roy Hill.

Light-Hearted, Musical Fun! This wonderful film, the basis of a recent Broadway hit show, is a lilting, light-hearted, laugh-filled musical which captivates and charms it's way into your heart.
Julie Andrews and Mary Tyler Moore are ideal in the lead roles of two innocent, jazz-age young girls who come to the big city to find love and successful careers.
There are many stand-out comedy performances by Bea Lillie, Jack Soo, Pat Morita and James Fox. Carol Channing comes very close to stealing the whole movie.
The 1920's setting adds just the right touch of fun, innocence and jazz-baby sparkle.
I strongly urge you to consider adding this film to your collection if you enjoy musicals, nostalgia, clever scripting and lots of laughter. Ideal for the whole family!

Wow Saw it as a kid and love it now as much as ever. The critics hated this but our family loves it and so does the new generation. Full on musical fun at it's best. Very funny send up of the old 20's serial movies. Submitted by Lesley (Sydney Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Thoroughly Wholesome Millie Review This is a classic family movie. Its great to see a movie without sex, violence or profanity. It was good also to see Mary Tyler Moore, Julie Andrews and Carol Channing together and in younger form. However Carol Channing looks the same today as she did some 30 years ago. Movie had a good whodunit story line. I rate this move 5 stars. Submitted by kathi (Spokane, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No This review is for a different format.

$7.09 A musical biography of British music hall and Broadway star Gertrude Lawrence, STAR! is a convincing and entertaining film, featuring an impressive score. The immensely talented Julie Andrews plays Lawrence, a beautiful, headstrong, and fiercely independent woman who will do anything for her career (including leaving her daughter and husband). Her early adventures in the music hall chorus and her later involvement in British high society are chronicled in this lush film that, though it received several Academy Award nominations, was not ...
