Personnel: David "Fathead" Newman (soprano, alto & tenor saxophones, flute); Bryan Carrott (vibraphone); John Hicks (piano); Buster Williams (bass); Winard Harper (drums). Recorded at The Studio, New York, New York on October 2, 2002. Personnel: David "Fathead" Newman (flute, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone); John Hicks (piano); Bryan Carrott (vibraphone); Winard Harper (drums). Liner Note Author: Willard Jenkins. Recording information: The Studio, New York, NY (10/02/2002). Photographer: Roy Gumpel. Veteran saxophonist David "Fathead" Newman shows off his versatility on this pleasing soul-jazz date. He plays tenor on four selections and flute on two others, and switches to soprano and alto for one song apiece. Whether swinging on alto during the cooking blues "Little Sonny's Tune," interpreting "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying" with a great deal of emotion, or sounding soulful on some newer material, Newman is in excellent form throughout the set. Vibraphonist Bryan Carrott (who deserves to be much better known) and pianist John Hicks also have plenty of fine solos. Overall, this CD finds Fathead in prime form, and it is easily recommended to fans of his straight-ahead dates. ~ Scott Yanow David "Fathead" Newman Gift Songs Purchase Gift CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Eric Alexander Nightlife In Tokyo CD (2003)

Personnel: Eric Alexander (tenor saxophone); Harold Mabern (piano); Joe Farnsworth (drums). Audio Mixer: David Luke. Liner Note Author: Ted Panken. Recording information: Avatar Studios, New York, NY (12/19/2002). Photographer: John Abbott . First off, while its title might suggest otherwise, this is not a live album; the CD takes its name from a piece by Eric Alexander's pianist, the veteran Harold Mabern. This is a fitting gesture, as Mabern is a key to this session's many pleasures and has been a mentor ...

Audio Mixer: Rudy Van Gelder. Recording information: Van Gelder Studios, Englewood Cliffs, NJ (08/14/2004). If ever a musician had a pedigree for simultaneously lamenting and celebrating the late Ray Charles, David "Fathead" Newman does. Newman met Charles in 1952 and was a working member of his band from 1954-1964. This program of tunes so closely associated with Charles features the tenor saxophonist in the company of vibist Steve Nelson, John Hicks in the piano chair, Winard Harper on drums, and bassist John Menegon. Newman's signature Southern soul tone, saturated in warmth and emotion, is by turns buttery, fat, ...
| | Wynton Marsalis Live At The House Of Tribes CD (2005)
Gift
$13.65 Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio debut, The Magic Hour, Marsalis gains first-class support from alto saxophonist Wessel Anderson, pianist Eric Lewis, drummer Joe Farnsworth, bassist Kengo Nakamura, and percussionist Orlando Q. Rodriguez. Special mention must be made of Robert Rucker for his highly energetic tambourine performance on the New Orleans "2nd Line" finale. New Orleans jazz aficionados may recognize this tune as "Joe Avery's Blues" and based on the cheering, clapping, and general ...
