A Collectables two-fer of two mid-'60s Don Shirley albums originally released on Columbia. Water Boy is a trio date from 1965 with Juri Taht on cello and Kenneth Fricker on bass. The Gospel According to Shirley, from 1968, backs the piano/cello/bass format with an orchestra. Among the mostly contemplative readings of sacred standards like "Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross" and "Glory Burdens Down the Lord" is the singular secular oddity of Bob Dylan's "Blowin' in the Wind." ~ Wade Kergan

4 stars Reissue from the past
I loved this LP ever since I heard it in college in the late 60s. Unfortunately my LP had a serious ding in the first cut. I was incredibly pleased to be able to acquire a re-issue on CD, and it even includes another album to boot! This is awesome easy listening music, very well played. I recommend it to anyone not familar with the Don Shirley Trio.

I purchased this CD because I loved the "Water Boy" album. Others have pointed out that those songs are available on a different album, but I believe they're a from a different recording, and I prefer this recording of those songs. I was pleasantly surprised by "The Gospel According To Don Shirley" portion of this CD. It proves to me that Don Shirley is a musical genius. The liner notes are very informative about the musical picture that Don Shirley is painting with each song, and makes me love his music even more. This CD is a must own!
