Ferdinand Leitner Conducts Anton Bruckner Symphony No. 9
$39.95 After releasing a collection of Snoop outtakes plus their "Re-Lit" version of Dr. Dre's The Chronic, the WIDEawake Entertainment group continued their unleashing of Death Row Records vault with their most ambitious project yet. The Ultimate Death Row Collection kicks off with a disc full of hits from the infamous West Coast label's heyday. With "Gin & Juice" (Snoop Dogg), "Nuthin' But a "G" Thang" (Dr. Dre), "I Ain't Mad at Cha" (2Pac), "Regulate" (Warren G.), and a slew of others, it's a whirlwind of vital G-Funk hits and West Coast classics that finishes on a high note, the fan favorite "Afro Puffs" (Lady of Rage). Disc two and three are where things get interesting, as a series of unreleased and rare tracks present an alternative-reality version of Death Row. From the LBC Crew's ominous "Six Shooter" to Soopafly's underappreciated party cut "This Type of Flow," the collection makes the Row seem much more active and diverse than most will remember. Add to that undiscovered gems like Kurupt throwing some beef Too Short's way ("Everybody Needs to Slow Down") Danny Boy delivering a ...

Ferdinand Leitner Conducts Anton Bruckner Symphony No. 9
$15.89 This live recording of Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians comes with lavish praise from the composer himself, a man who has made no secret of his low regard for both live recordings in general and live recordings of his own music by European musicians in particular. This performance was recorded in concert at the Ferenc Liszt Academy in Budapest. The Amadinda percussion ensemble, normally a quartet, added the requisite 14 additional players in order to meet the demands of the score and learned the parts by interpreting Reich's original version of the printed music rather than the official published score from the late 1990s. With Music for 18 Musicians, Reich made it clear that he was not a "minimalist" in the sense that his contemporaries Philip Glass and Terry Riley were minimalist; while the piece is characterized by repeated figures and relatively slow harmonic movement, there is a tremendous intricacy to the structure that underlies this composition, and it covers a large amount of conceptual and sonic ground over the course of its one-hour length. Amadinda and the rest of the ensemble play and sing with an irresistible energy and verve; Reich is entirely right when he says, in the notes, that "one is simply swept along" by the power of their performance. Very highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

Ferdinand Leitner Conducts Anton Bruckner Symphony No. 9
$18.99 Review "Reflections" American Record Guide July/Aug. 2003Double Bass virtuoso Arni Egilsson builds dramatic, cinematic sounds on"Reflections".I like his music best when he is exploring textures. His themes and hisdevelopment of the material in the large ensemble works are effective.......What did stick with me was the material in "Erinnerungen".This is a beautiful song, harmonically focussed and well organized. Ilistened to it several times, each time savoring both the performance andthe beauty of the melody. All the performers are very good, but I wasespecially taken with Gloria Cheng, who brings characteristic clarity andintensity to "Just a Thought"Â Issue 48 - Vol.4, No.12 April 2003Â SoundTracks: April 2003 Reflections ARNI EGILSSON Southern California based Árni Egilsson seems to possess a primordial connection to his native Iceland that seeps into his solemn, yet energetic compositions. Egilsson's orchestral work Reflections summons the darkness of winter, using icy textures and isolated instrumental solos to paint a desolate atmosphere tinted with hope and yearning. The bellowing horn melodies in Blær evoke ancient hunting calls over the spirited backdrop of woodwinds. The piano solo Just A Thought lightly drifts about, repeatedly landing and taking flight. Again tapping into the Nordic psyche, Egilsson's mystical treatment of sound culminates with the vocal works Erinnerungen and Dies Irae. RN Thanks for a superb CD.Sheril BerkovitchNice One !!Oli MassiveIt's about time an album has been devoted to the works of Arne Egillson! It is very well-produced, and the performances are also well-done.Stan H WrightA great album of reflection that picks you up and embraces you in its depth.Jeff MifsudTHE ICELAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRAFounded in 1950, the ISO is probably the youngest national orchestra in Europe. The ISO has toured extensively in Europe and the USA and over the years many renowned guest artists have enriched the orchestra's performances, including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Yehudi Menuhin, Wilhelm Kempff, Claudio Arrau, André Previn, Daniel Barenboim, Luciano Pavarotti, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Emil Gilels and Mstislav Rostropovich to name a few.The ISO has earned an international recognition for its many recordings on the Chandos, BIS and Naxos labels.HANNU KOIVULAstudied conducting with Jorma Panula at the Sibelius Academy in Finland and graduated cum laude in 1987.
