(1 Customer Review)
Drummer Mike Clark, the funkmaster, now shows us that he is a jazzmaster. The bicoastal musician, known primarily for his phenomenal drumming on the landmark "Headhunters" album by Herbie Hancock, has chosen top players from both Los Angeles and New York
Personnel: Mike Clark (drums); Chris Potter (soprano & tenor saxophones); Bob Sheppard (tenor saxophone); Jack Walrath (trumpet); Billy Childs (piano); James Genus, Robert Hurst (bass). Recorded at Westrax Studios, New York, New York in June 1999. Drummer Mike Clark knows the jazz drumming lexicon and is carrying on the true tradition with his fiery playing. On Summertime he features Billy Childs on piano, Chris Potter and Bob Sheppard on saxophones, James Genus and Robert Hurst on bass, and Jack Walrath on trumpet. Nine songs by several jazz masters comprise the program, including three Wayne Shorter songs and two compositions written by pianist Jeff Pittson. Mike Clark is sensational on the opening track, "Brujo." Clark queues it up and sax master Chris Potter takes over with a dynamic solo on soprano saxophone that takes you to the edge of the song's destiny compliments of his stellar improvising. Billy Childs is smoking on his solo and brings a solid groove that testifies to his many years of playing with Mike Clark. The funk master now shows that he is a jazz master on this track with his great Krupa-style drumming that is wide open, intense, and just outright brilliant. One of the best bets on this set is the opening track, "Summertime," for the new rendition that literally snags you from the first note. ~ Paula Edelstein

| | Miles Davis Birdland 1951 CD (2004) Remastered
Summertime
$8.29 Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Sonny Rollins, Big Nick Nicholas (tenor saxophone); J.J. Johnson (trombone); Kenny Drew, Billy Taylor, Charles Mingus (piano); Tommy Potter (bass); Art Blakey (drums). Recorded in 1951. Includes liner notes by Ira Gitler. These ten tracks, taken from radio broadcasts from the legendary Birdland in 1951, represent a particularly fruitful period in Miles Davis' development as a bandleader. There are three different broadcasts included here; two comprising six cuts in total were from June and September and have been issued in various forms on bootlegs over the decades. Four cuts, however, taken from a broadcast on February 17, have never been available in any form and it is these as well the marginally better fidelity of the entire set that makes this worth owning for Miles freaks -- and only Miles freaks. The sextet on the February and June dates included J.J. Johnson, Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey, Tommy Potter, and Kenny Drew. In September, Charles Mingus, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Billy Taylor, and Big Nick Nicholas joined Davis and Blakey. ...

| | Wynton Marsalis Live At The House Of Tribes CD (2005)
Summertime
$13.65 Live at the House of Tribes documents trumpeter Wynton Marsalis performing with his sextet at the intimate community theater space in New York City on December 15, 2002. Apparently an annual ritual of sorts for Marsalis, the performance makes for one of his best live recordings since 1986's stellar Live at Blues Alley. Backed by a slightly altered lineup from his 2005 Blue Note studio debut, The Magic Hour, Marsalis gains first-class support from alto saxophonist Wessel Anderson, pianist Eric Lewis, drummer Joe Farnsworth, bassist Kengo Nakamura, and percussionist Orlando Q. Rodriguez. Special mention must be made of Robert Rucker for his highly energetic tambourine performance on the New Orleans "2nd Line" finale. New Orleans jazz aficionados may recognize this tune as "Joe Avery's Blues" and based on the cheering, clapping, and general rowdiness of the crowd, it probably found the band marching around the room. In fact, one of the great things about the album is that you can really hear the crowd. There are many moments of the band playing a particularly ...
