| | Ragpickers Tony Parenti/Evan Christopher CD Ragpickers Discography of CDs
In January 1949, clarinetist Tony Parenti, pianist Ralph Sutton, and drummer George Wettling recorded six rags, including the clarinetist's "Crawfish Crawl." Considering that ragtime had been considered virtually dead for over 30 years and, other than "Maple Leaf Rag," its pieces had largely gone unexplored since then, this was an important session. The music is not all written out as would be the case with classic ragtime, and to an extent the musicians jam a bit, but always keep the themes and tight structure in mind. In reissuing this music, it was decided to record a similar date in 2002, with clarinetist Evan Christopher, pianist Jeff Barnhart, and drummer Hal Smith performing nine more rags (all obscurities other than Joplin's "Heliotrope Bouquet"). Other than the improved recording quality, the music is very similar to the Parenti date, making this set a delight to fans of both ragtime and New Orleans jazz. ~ Scott Yanow

WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES, a 1999 Verve release, heralds the return of the cool and groovy Latin-tinged jazz of the '60s. Upon hearing the opening track, a bossa-nova-fied version of Irving Berlin's "Let's Face The Music And Dance," one might think he had accidentally put on a Getz/Gilberto record. In fact, it's hard to avoid comparing Krall's breathy alto ...

Tony Parenti/Evan Christopher music CDs
$10.59 In some parts of the world, it's always 1974. The deaths of Berry Oakley and Duane Allman still sting, Waylon Jennings and Jerry Jeff Walker are revered, shouts of "Free Bird"!!! at concerts aren't meant ironically, and people still remember who the Marshall Tucker Band were. It's a simpler, better place, and there, Confederate Railroad are superstars. On their fifth album, the unreconstructed country-rockers plow through songs like the sassy "She Treats Her Body Like a Temple" ("and I treat mine like a honky-tonk," continues lead singer Danny Shirley) and the self-explanatory story-song "White Trash With Money," with all the twangy guitars, honky tonk piano, and keening steel guitar that are required for a good country-rockin' time. David Allan Coe and George Jones drop by to lend a further air of outlaw country bad-assedness, and the group even throws in an honest to goodness ballad, ...

$8.45 Along with the Clash, this Manchester UK group was one of the first Punk Rock groups to appear in the wake of the Sex Pistols. This digitally remastered, budget-priced, 18-song collection of singles b-sides, and album cuts is designed to introduce the Pop/Punk group to a new generation of listeners.
Given the consistent brilliance of the Buzzcocks during their first golden era (1976-1980), you'd have to work pretty hard to compile an hour's worth of their music that isn't a kick to listen to, and sure enough, Buzzcocks Finest: Ever Fall in Love? offers 63 minutes of chainsaw guitars, irresistible hooks, and Pete Shelley's angst-ridden tales of love and confusion in the modern world -- in short, the stuff that made this ...
