(2 Customer Reviews)
Gordian Knot's second album is very much grounded in the British prog rock movement of the 1970s, and particularly in the sound of King Crimson. The almost wholly instrumental effort has a couple of very direct links to those good old days in the presence of one-time Yes/King Crimson drummer Bill Bruford on half of the tracks, as well as ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett on three. This doesn't open up as much territory as multi-instrumentalist and principal Gordian Knot member Sean Malone's inspirations did. It's just accomplished instrumental prog rock with a heavy fusion flavor, and a rather somber, cerebral air, though there are plenty of hard rock dynamics, and occasional traces of other textures, like '70s Soft Machine and flamenco guitar. For those that admire Sean Malone's instrumental prowess, there are a couple of solo showcases for his work on bass ("Arsis") and stick ("Grace"). ~ Richie Unterberger
In 1999, former Cynic bassist Sean Malone startled the metal and progressive rock world with the self-titled debut release from his Gordian Knot project. Featuring a lineup of renowned musicians it blurred the distinction between rock and metal - Gordian Knot is a defining statement for the genre. Featuring Malone joined by members of King Crimson, Dream Theater and Watchtower. Three years in the making, Gordian Knot's follow-up release, Emergent, pushes the envelope even further. Sean Malone is once again surrounded by a stellar cast including Jason Gobel, Bill Bruford, Steve Hackett, Jim Matheos and more. Sensory/Laser's Edge. 2003.

Gordian Knot Emergent Songs Emergent Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) A great album from great artists! Truly a great fusion of progressive rock , metal, and jazz. The first Gordian Knot release was great, but Emergent is an improvement with more catchy melodies, and more musical expression. A must have for fans of the first Gordian Knot and for prog fans in general. Submitted by 2thamaxx (Newtown, PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Emergent album
$13.99 Star-studded projects often add up to very little, but Gordian Knot's eponymous debut turns out to be one of the best progressive rock albums released in the last years of the second millennium. And that's thanks to the fact that Sean Malone held on to the reins, guiding the project to its goal of finely crafted guitar-driven instrumental songs. Malone has a prog metal background, so do most of his guests (Cynic drummer Sean Reinert, King Crimson guitarist Trey Gunn, Dream Theater bassist John Myung, along with Ron Jarzombek and Glenn Snelwar). And yet the album only has a couple of tracks that can be qualified as "metal" ("Rivers Dancing," "Singularity"). Everything else falls into the guitar craft of the likes of David Torn and Robert Fripp. "Galois" opens the set with a seductive soundscape. "Code/Anticode" is the album's main showcase, an intelligent prog rocker with a solid rhythm section and a ...
| | Porcupine Tree In Absentia CD (2002)
Emergent CD music
$8.55 There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements in place, rich with the likely possibility of them becoming a contemporary counterpart to Pink Floyd.
Hailed by Billboard as 'cinematic...simple gorgeous', ...
| | Dream Theater Train Of Thought CD (2003)
Emergent music CDs
$11.05 TRAIN OF THOUGHT continues the legacy of the progressive metal legends, with all the requisite superhuman metallic musicianship that their fans have come to expect. This outing continues in the heavier mode that began with 2002's SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE, reaching even further into darker, personal lyrical themes.
Guitars are the dominant expressive voice here, with keyboards scaled considerably back from the signature Dream Theater sound. Band members Mike Portnoy (drums) and John Petrucci (guitar) continue their do-it-yourself production approach, opting for recording venues on their native Long Island (much of the band's album work has taken place in upstate New York at Bear Tracks and Little Bear Studios). "As I Am" and "This Dying Soul" at times borrow generously ...

Emergent songs
$10.75 Evening with John Petrucci & Jordan Rudess is an unheralded recording by Dream Theater and Liquid Tension Experiment alumnus John Petrucci, and Jordan Rudess is a unique entry in the Dream Theater family discography. Recorded live in Nyack, New York, the duo performed a mixed set of acoustic and electric (guitar only) compositions. Both players are world-class musicians, but Rudess in particular demonstrates ...

| | Aaron Neville Believe CD (2003)
Emergent album
$15.05 BELIEVE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Soul Gospel Album.
Aaron Neville's is an angel's voice contained within the body of a dockworker (which he once was), and it turns out to be perfect for gospel. BELIEVE is the New Orleans native's second full-length release of religious material. Teaming with noted Muscle Shoals session cat Barry Beckett, Neville delivers an interesting slate of material that finds him rejoicing in his faith without becoming preachy. Original material is sprinkled throughout, including the smooth, acoustic-guitar-driven "Let Go," and "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus" with its robust brass arrangements. Otherwise, Neville is priming the pump for other people's material. Among the notable songs included are a casual reading of Pete Seeger's "If I Had a Hammer," a vibrant remake of the Edwin Hawkins Singers 1969 gospel-pop crossover smash "Oh Happy Day," and a punchy cover of Hank Williams's "I Saw The Light" featuring The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. Other highlights include a reading of Dylan's "Gotta Serve Somebody," (whose original version also featured Beckett.), a goosebump-inducing "Ava Maria," and a picture-perfect "A Change Is Gonna Come."

| | Lazarus/Blues Project CD (2005)
Emergent CD music
$16.45 On paper, the Blues Project was a great idea, but in spite of an abundance of talent (Al Kooper, Steve Katz, Danny Kalb, and Tommy Flanders were all members), somehow the band's innovative mix of blues, folk, rock, pop, and jazz never quite gelled the way it should have. The original lineup released one studio project (Projections) and two live sets (Live at the Café Au Go Go and Live at Town Hall) in the late '60s before collapsing from the usual ailments of the era (ego, poor management, drugs), ...
