With millions of album sales, multiple gold records, and several Grammy Award nominations to his credit, R. Carlos Nakai has single-handedly revived the art of the Native American flute. While drawing deeply upon his Navajo-Ute heritage, Nakai simultaneously embraces other forms, frequently performing alongside Western classical, jazz, and world musicians.
Recorded nearly 20 years after his debut album, FOURTH WORLD finds Nakai competently backed by the Canyon Symphony, whose size belies the gentle cushion of sound it produces. Particularly on "Whippoorwill," flute and orchestra integrate beautifully, in this instance perfectly evoking the movement of a bird.
Personnel includes: R. Carlos Nakai (Native American flute); Jim A. Apperson, Mike Prokes (violin); Laura Apperson, Sidney Williams (viola); Maria Simiz, Jason Stone (cello); Paula Engerer (oboe); Fred Forney (trumpet); John Ericson (French horn); John Rosenkrans (bass); Will Clipman (percussion).
Producers: Billy Williams, Jack miller, Robert Doyle.

Fourth World album
$12.65 Chris Potter gets more and more adventurous. On this follow-up to the strong Gratitude, the tenor and soprano saxophonist beefs up strong writing and heady group interplay with occasional sampled sounds and miscellaneous textures like clavinet and reed organ. True to form, he plays additional wind instruments -- alto flute and bass clarinet in this case -- and isn't afraid of overdubbing them to create lush orchestration, on tracks like "Snake Oil" and "Any Moment Now." On the haunting "Invisible Man" he even doubles the alto flute melody with his singing voice. Not until the fifth track, a Meters-like adaptation of the spiritual "Children Go," do you hear a 4/4 tempo; loping lines over odd meters prevail, with pianist Kevin Hays, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Bill Stewart expertly laying down the edgy grooves. (Like on Gratitude, Hays doubles on ...
| | Eric Bibb Sisters & Brothers CD (2004)
Fourth World CD music
$13.09 As its title implies, this is a spiritually based collaboration from three distinct -- even disparate -- yet surprisingly harmonious voices. Mostly, but not entirely acoustic, the trio of rootsy singers trade lead vocals on smooth jazz/blues ("Bessie's Dream"), folk-blues ("Good Stuff"), Delta blues ("Rolling Log"), gospel (an a cappella version of Sister Rosetta Tharpe's "Rock Daniel"), and combinations of those genres. On paper it sounds scattershot, but in actuality this is a thoughtfully paced combination of styles, united by three affecting voices. Eric Bibb's smoother Keb' Mo' approach meshes surprisingly well with Rory Block's more penetrating Delta croon and Maria Muldaur's sassy, sexy, throaty growl. Covers of Jimmy Reed's "Little ...

| | Brian Lynch Conclave CD (2005)
Fourth World album
$14.49 Trumpeter Brian Lynch has often played second fiddle to his Latin jazz A-lister friends. Be it with trombone giant Conrad Herwig, piano luminary Eddie Palmieri, or any of the host of New York Latin jazzers with whom Lynch has collaborated, the most notable records that he has appeared on have him listed after the word "featuring." The Brian Lynch Latin Jazz Sextet features a group of players who are similarly stellar sidemen, who have backed the biggest artists in the genre, but whose names are not often seen in lights. With the release of Conclave, their day in the sun has come. This 2005 release ...

| | Lynyrd Skynyrd Christmas Time Again (2000)
Fourth World songs
$17.49 A Southern rock Christmas album? Hey, it makes as much sense as Run-DMC's "Christmas in Hollis," and the good news is that the Lynyrd Skynyrd boys--along with special guests the Charlie Daniels Band and .38 Special--truly get into the spirit with a nice mix of seasonal standards (rock and otherwise) and originals. Among the latter, the Daniels ...
