This is a DVD adaptation of Peter Shaffer's outstanding play. Richard Burton shines in this powerful adaptation of Peter Shaffer's historic play. Burton plays Martin Dysert, a psychiatrist who struggles to understand one of his patients, Alan Strang, played chillingly by Peter Firth, who, for some seemingly inexplicable reason, blinded six horses. Martin, who wrestles with his own demons, becomes unsure where he stops and the boy's imagination begins. The screenplay was adapted by Shaffer. The film received three Academy Award nominations. Sidney Lumet directed this film version of Peter Shaffer's dramatic play, transforming theatrical symbolism into cinematic realism. Richard Burton received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his performance as Martin Dysert, a psychiatrist determined to unravel the disturbed mind of Alan Strang (Peter Firth), a young stableboy. In a fit of rage, Strang has blinded a stable of six horses. The court then assigns Dysert to probe the young man's mind in order to understand why he committed such a violent act. But the doctor, who is battling demons of his own, wonders if he can save the boy--and whether saving him at all is the right thing to do. Joan Plowright stands out as Dora Strang, the young boy's mother. Filmed in Canada.
Both Anthony Perkins and Leonard Nimoy played the part of the psychiatrist on Broadway. Equus Reviews: "...As good [an adaptation] as one can get on film....Beautifully, almost grandly acted, by Richard Burton..."
-- Vincent Canby, New York Times "...Lumet's actors bring plenty of conviction..."

Equus Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) Eqqus not for the faint of heart If you are willing to forgo the conventional Holleywood rubbish you can find yourself challenged as to what you believe, where worship and the divine have there origins in those who worship or in the Gods as we precieve them. Do yourself a favor sitdown alone or with your most heretical friends and challenge yourself to "put the bit in your mouth." Submitted by joseph (Apache Junction, Arizona) Was This Review Helpful? Excellent acting, heavy going film This is the kind of film that is about acting. It features some excellent performances, especially by Richard Burton. Story of a young man's obsession with horses is very heavy going at times. Still an interesting movie. Jenny Agutter is great as the girl next door and is featured in a pretty explicit sex scene. Superb Equus! This is a top drama. Surprising me in many ways. It's so dramatic to see the boy suffer and feel his pain. Later the psychiatrist who's trying to help him to understand his behaviour follows him and start to think about his own life. Peter Firth is outstanding and also Richard Burton as the psychologist. | | One Night At Mccool's DVD (2001) Widescreen
Equus DVD
$16.89 The title refers to the night when three men, Randy (Matt Dillon), his cousin Carl (Paul Reiser) and Detective Dehling (John Goodman), all meet Jewel Valentine (Liv Tyler) at a bar called McCool's. Actually, they don't so much meet her as fall under her spell when they first lay eyes on her. In her clinging red dress she looks like a cross between a beautiful damsel in distress and the Lady In Red looking for John Dillinger. The story begins with Randy, desperate to be rid of Jewel, hiring a sleazy hitman, played by Michael Douglas in an outré toupee. His story of how Jewel led him to ruin, filmed in a stylized flashback bathed in blue, is mirrored by Carl talking to his therapist--played with a delicious verve by Reba McEntire, and Detective Dehling ...
