Yes, Love Songs is a compilation targeted toward the Valentine's Day market. And how many Johnny Mathis albums, really, could not be said to consist primarily of "love songs"? But actually, this is a little more interesting than it could have been, since it's not just a collection of some hits and favorites with rearranged sequencing. Only one of these 16 tracks, "The Twelfth of Never," was a hit, and the rest of them are songs associated with films and Broadway musicals, like "My Funny Valentine," "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing," "She Loves Me," "A Man and a Woman," "Where Do I Begin," and "All the Things You Are." Spanning 1957-1993 (though all but two tracks predate the 1980s), it's characteristically lush orchestrated crooning. But it might make for a nice change of pace in those homes where Mathis serves as makeout music since the material isn't overly familiar. For Mathis fans, the chief treats, or the annoyances if you don't appreciate needing to buy an entire CD for a sliver of new offerings, are two unreleased 1965 tracks, the aforementioned "She Loves Me," and "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing." The disc does stumble by including three mediocre covers of 1970s pop hits, "And I Love You So," "You Light Up My Life," and "You Are the Sunshine of My Life." ~ Richie Unterberger

Johnny Mathis Love Songs Songs Love Songs Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Previously unreleased tracks make this a winner! Another Mathis compilation ... but this one provides a teaser for die-hard Mathis fans with two previously unreleased tracks from his years on the Mercury lable. Reminiscent of the Global Masters twin CD release some years ago, this CD boats SHE LOVES ME and LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING from the mid-sixties, previously unavailable in any format and now on CD for the first time. A fine selection of 14 other tracks, not seen on other compilations, covering his early songs from the 60's to the 90's, makes this CD a worthwhile addition to any Johnny Mathis collection. JOHNNY DOES IT AGAIN Yes, this is another cmpilation album, but not only has 2 new tracks---She Loves Me, and Love is a many splendored thing--but also some tracks that have not been on cd before---eg---Thee I love, No strings---I would have preferred there to be more of these songs on the album---12th of never must be on every compilation album going.
But it is a wonderful ,smooth collection of Love Songs from an expert in singing Love songs---ideal for Valentines Day--or that special Birthday or Anniversary---A must for any Mathis Collector. Submitted by MBDOYLE4 (kENT ,ENGLAND) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

$15.95 By the time this two-CD, 40-track anthology hit the stores in 2004, consumers had a wide choice of Johnny Mathis compilations that contained his biggest hits in variable surroundings, ranging from succinct single-disc collections to box sets. This one does have all of the major late-'50s/early-'60s hits you'd expect of anything with "essential" in its title, although -- in an effort to make this a career-spanning selection -- the entirety of disc two is devoted to his post-1970 work, when Mathis was a run-of-the-mill adult contemporary singer (albeit one who did return briefly ...

Love Songs songs
$9.75 George Wein is best known as the founder of the Newport Jazz Festival in 1954 and an enthusiastic impresario who became instrumental in jump-starting jazz festivals in New York City in the early '70s, but Wein has also recorded as a pianist and singer from time to time. The Atlantic LP Wein, Women and Song features Wein in fine form; his friendly sounding vocals are rather soft and mellow, with a bit of vibrato on the end of nearly every phrase, though the trumpet solos by either Ruby Braff (trading licks with tenor saxophonist Sammy Margolis on a superb treatment of "You're Lucky to Me") or Bobby Hackett (with fine muted backgrounds on the melancholy "I'm Through with Love") add something special to each song.
