After leaving the Paragons in 1964, Bob Andy became one of the most dexterous talents in the reggae field, a producer, arranger, songwriter, musician, and vocalist on recordings with Clement "Coxsone" Dodd for Studio One and, later, Harry Johnson and Rupie Edwards for the Trojan family of labels. Fire Burning is the first CD collection of his Trojan sides, most of them coming as a duet act with the wondrous Marcia Griffiths. They covered a variety of interesting material, including the Motown duet classic "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing," a pair of Dylan covers ("Lay Lady Lay," "It Ain't Me Babe"), and even Tin Pan Alley standards like "Let's Fall in Love" and "Gee Baby, Ain't I Good to You?" Unsurprisingly, their biggest hits were also standards, Nina Simone's "Young, Gifted and Black" and the Duboff/Kornfeld nugget "Pied Piper" (a hit for Crispian St. Peters in 1966). With the great divide between Studio One and Trojan material, however, this collection unfortunately doesn't include many of Andy's most familiar solo songs: "Feeling Soul," "Going Home," "Unchained," and "My Time," among a few others. For those, look to one of the many fine Studio One/Heartbeat collections. ~ John Bush Bob Andy Fire Burning Songs Fire Burning Review

| | Heart Of The Congos CD (1977)
Fire Burning CD music
$9.29 The original version of HEART OF THE CONGOS is available on VP (1287).
HEART OF THE CONGOS is a landmark reggae album whose initial obscurity was due to a dispute between producer Lee Perry and his label, Island Records. Perry's idea to create a roots vocal album took shape when Cedric Myton and Roy Johnson auditioned at his Black Ark Studio. The resulting album had Myton and Johnson wrapping their falsetto and tenor around one another in the sweetly rendered "Children Crying" and "La La Bam-Bam."
Perry's production lent HEART OF THE CONGOS a hazy, dub-like sheen that swathed the Rastafarian imagery of songs such as "Sodom & Gomorrow" and "Ark Of Covenant" in muted shadings. Backed by a number of legendary session musicians including Sly Dunbar and Ernest Ranglin, HEART OF THE CONGOS could have been a smash, ...

| | Culture Harder Than The Rest CD (1978)
Fire Burning album
$9.29 The string of albums Culture recorded during the late '70s contained some of the most reliably solid sets from the tail end of reggae's roots era. These early releases for the production team of Joe Gibbs and Errol "E.T." Thompson yielded the group's finest work. Following an unfortunate engagement at Duke Reid's famous Treasure Isle studios (the results of which can be found on the unauthorized Africa Stand Alone), the vocal trio hooked up with Sonia Pottinger and engineer Errol Brown. The partnership, kick-started by Harder Than the Rest, proved highly fruitful, producing a series of albums that closely approached the quality of the ...

Although reggae draws the bulk of attention outside the Caribbean, the region boasts several other different musical forms, including zouk, compas, and, of course, calypso. Calypso's offspring, soca, is probably the most accessible of all. Formed during the mid-'70s disco era, soca or "soul calypso," swerved away from calypso's heavy social commentary and focused more on an international audience, pulsating dance beats and party lyrics. Often derided for watering down calypso's sharp storytelling, soca continues to be one of the Caribbean's most popular musical genres, and Soca 101 reveals exactly why. Packed with legendary soca superstars such as Arrow, Byron Lee, Burning Flames, and the Mighty Sparrow, this compilation indeed ...
