| Worth it just for the original Fireworks music.
Handel: Music for the Royal Fireworks I had this recording of the original scoring of the Music for the Royal Fireworks on vinyl and have been desperately searching for it on CD for years. The Penguin Stereo Guide talks of "the outstanding bargain disc of the original wind scoring of the Fireworks music, made on the night of the 200th anniversary of Handel's death during the hours when virually all of London's oboists and a sufficient number of brass players would be free. Here is the original as Handel scored it for 24 oboes, 12 bassoons ... 9 horns, 9 trumpets, side-drums and 3 kettle-drums. The result is a tour-de-force and the recording sounds as fresh now as the night when it was made. The spontaneity of the playing is exhilarating and the sonotities rich and exciting." 'Nuff said? Suffice it to say I prefer it to the (excellent) Fennell version on Telarc. This gem alone justifies the modest price of the disc.
