| | Silverchair Rarities CD - Import Silverchair Discography of CDs
Australian grunge-rock trio Silverchair first offered the 11 cuts on 2000's RARITIES as a bonus disc to a best-of package. Among the highlights is a remix of their hit "Freak."
This Australia-only rarities collection is an abbreviated version of the 2000 Sony set Best of Silverchair, Vol. 1. This makes it non-essential for fans, as most will already have the more comprehensive Sony release. The casual Silverchair listener will likely be more interested in Best of, as well, since it includes the breakthrough Frogstomp hits "Tomorrow" and "Pure Massacre." To its credit, Rarities does feature the frail ballad "Ana's Song [Open Fire]" in acoustic remix form, as well as a scathing, spot-on cover of Minor Threat's classic title anthem. ~ Johnny Loftus

Rarities album
$8.25 SECOND HELPING is also available with PRONOUNCED LEH'NERD SKIN'ERD on one cassette.
It was hard to believe that Lynyrd Skynyrd could possibly top its classic, near-perfect 1973 debut, PRONOUNCED LEH-NERD SKIN-NERD. However, the boys from Florida accomplished the near-impossible with their sophomore release one year later, SECOND HELPING. It's hard to determine the better album of the two, but both proved to be a solid one-two punch that made Lynyrd Skynyrd one of the '70s' biggest (and unfortunately, most tragic) rock bands.
SECOND HELPING also helped define and create the Southern rock movement, as proven by such tracks as the classic anthem "Sweet Home Alabama" (which include the now-famous dig at Neil Young), the cautionary rocker "The Needle & the Spoon," and the biographical tale of "Workin' For MCA." With its fine writing and playing, and scores of hard-hitting Southern rock riffs and grooves, SECOND HELPING assured Skynyrd's ascendancy to rock stardom and FM radio immortality.

$6.59 Digitally remastered by Doug Schwartz (Audio Mechanics, Los Angeles, California).
Besides being a touring warhorse, Lynyrd Skynyrd cranked out albums at a brisk rate during its original lineup's brief recording career, averaging at least one new release per year. 1975 saw the emergence of Skynyrd's third album in as many years, NUTHIN' FANCY.

| | Merle Haggard Down Every Road 1962-1994 CDs (1996) Box Set
Rarities music CDs
$39.59 DOWN EVERY ROAD covers Merle Haggard's entire career, culling material from the vaults of Capitol, MCA, Curb and Sony Records.
Recorded between 1962 and 1994. Includes liner notes by Daniel Cooper.
Country music has had a long and proud tradition of outlaws and hard men, but Merle Haggard is in a class by himself. A singer-songwriter regularly capable of heartbreaking emotional honesty, Haggard has also maintained an aura of danger, as if he'd be just as happy to punch your face in as to buy you a beer. The essential four-disc box set, DOWN EVERY ROAD 1962-1994, is a perfect overview of both sides of Hag's personality. Its 100 songs are spread over four solid discs, without an ounce ...
| | Keith Urban 1991 CD (1999) (Import) Australia
Rarities songs
$14.25 "Rollercoaster" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
This rereleased version of the Australian country artist's 1991 debut features 15 tracks, including "Only You."
Keith Urban is Australian, but listening to his debut self-titled solo CD, you'd swear he was raised somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon line. Just as the Beatles mimicked the American accents of their musical heroes, Urban, the former leader of the group the Ranch, adopts the twang of the country stars he heard growing up Down Under. Urban's brand of country includes soulful vocals; a nice mix of acoustic and steel guitars, banjo, fiddles, and mandolins; and some fine songwriting, from Urban, Steve Wariner, and even two former members of the Go-Gos's (!) The subject here, with few exceptions, is love in all its aspects, from the hooky opening cut, "It's a Love Thing," to the gorgeous ballad "Your Everything," to the Cajun stomp of ...

Rarities album
$10.29 A sensation when they hit the Pittsburgh low-rent scene in mid-2000, the Modey Lemon explode on their self-titled debut, a bluesy, brutal mess of muddy guitars, rolling Keith Moon drumming, and squealing Moog synthesizer. Singer/guitar player Phil Boyd and drummer Paul Quattrone ...

| | Franklin Kiermyer Elevation CD (1974) Reissue; Remastered
Rarities music CDs
$8.19 Elevation, Pharoah Sanders' final album for Impulse!, is a mixed bag. Four of the five cuts were recorded live at the Ash Grove in Los Angeles in September of 1973, and the lone studio track, "Greeting to Saud (Brother McCoy Tyner)," was recorded in the same month at Wally Heider's studio. The live date is fairly cohesive, with beautiful modal piano work from Joe Bonner, Pharoah playing tenor and soprano as well as a myriad of percussion instruments and vocalizing in places, and a percussion and rhythm section that included Michael Carvin on drums, bassist Calvin Hill, and hand drummers John Blue and Lawrence Killian. The standout on the set is the opener. At 18 minutes, it's the longest thing here and gives the band a chance to stretch into African and Latin terrains. Sanders' long, loping, suspended lines create a kind of melodic head that is underscored by Bonner's hypnotically repetitive piano work, playing the same chord progression over and over again as he begins his solos (one on each horn). Somewhere near the five-minute mark, Pharoah enters into a primal wail and the whole thing becomes unhinged, moving into a deep blowing session of free improv. Honks, squeals, wails, and Bonner pounding ...
